University hosts An Audience with Shelina Zahra Jan Mohammed
18 February 10
The University of Bradford will host an audience with Shelina Zahra Jan Mohammed, author of 'Love in a Headscarf', today (Thursday, 18 February, 2010).
The event is part of a series of activities aimed at families to encourage family learning by promoting reading as an activity that both parents and children can do together.
Shelina Zahra Jan Mohammed, will give a talk on her book along with a short reading from it before delivering a creative writing workshop to children aged 6 to 13 and their parents.
Community Development Co-ordinator, at the University of Bradford, Yasmin Hanif, said: "Many parents in our community do not read at all. Some only read magazines about celebrities and daily news papers, but not literature that widens their vocabulary and benefits their children in the long term.
"This event builds upon our trip to the Ilkley Literature Festival in October, where we took 10 families to take part in the family learning day. This event builds on our family learning programme planned for 2010. At Easter we hope to take a further 15 families to Northern College in Barnsley to take part in a three day residential where parents can find out more about returning to education and children will be able to take part in some planned family learning activities."
