University hosts an audience with Shami Chakrabarti

    26 May 09

The University of Bradford is inviting members of the public to An Audience with Shami Chakrabarti, on Wednesday 3 June 2009.

The event, part of the 'Faith and the City' programme, has been developed by the University's School of Lifelong Education and Development in partnership with the Bradford District Faiths Forum. This event will see Shami Chakrabarti, discuss civil liberties and human rights, focussing on the impact this has on our everyday life.

Shami has been the Director of Liberty (The National Council for Civil Liberties) since September 2003. She first joined Liberty as In-House Counsel on 10 September 2001 and became heavily involved in its engagement with the 'War on Terror', with the defence and promotion of human rights values in Parliament, the Courts and wider society.

Since becoming Liberty's Director she has written, spoken and broadcast widely on the importance of the post-WW2 human rights framework as an essential component of democratic society. She is Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University, a Governor of the London School of Economics and the British Film Institute, and a Visiting Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford and a Master of the Bench of Middle Temple.

Dean of the School of Lifelong Education and Development, Nadira Mirza, said: "It is a coup for the Bradford and Keighley District to have Shami Chakrabarti to speak at the University on the eve of the European elections.  Shami's mass appeal reaches out to students, community activists and professionals alike."

The discussion will be held at 6:00pm in the Great Hall, Richmond Building at the University.   Places are free but must be booked. To reserve your place e-mail nasar.fiaz@bradforddistrictfaithsforum.org.uk or call 01274 395398.
