University hosts conference to tackle hate crimes

The University of Bradford¿s School of Social and International Studies has hosted a conference to consider the motivation behind hate crimes, and strategies for successfully tackling them.
The one day conference took place on 25th July and explored what is meant by hate crime, providing an opportunity for activists, practitioners and academics to consider new ways of thinking about and safeguarding against hate crime.
Organised in conjunction with the university’s ‘Respect’ Staff forum and Disability service, and Bradford Equity Partnership and Stop Hate UK, attendees will benefit from the experiences of agencies who respond on a day to day basis to local and national concerns about hate crime. Key note presentations will be delivered by Nathan Hall from the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, University of Portsmouth and Paul Giannasi, Police Superintendent, Fairness and Confidence Unit, the Ministry of Justice.
Over 52,000 hate crimes were reported in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in 2009, motivated by prejudice on the grounds of disability, gender, race or nationality, religion, belief or sexual orientation. This conference will provide an opportunity for delegates to reflect on the various strands of hate crime, and the accompanying strategies for reporting and prevention.
Rebecca Hewitt, Chief Executive of the Equity Partnership said: “We’re really pleased that this event will take place in partnership with the University of Bradford, and that it will bring together diverse professionals working within the field of addressing hate crime. It is not always made clear how much academic theory is applied to the work of the Police, and organisations such as the Equity Partnership. Equally, academics don’t often get the chance to meet with practitioners and discuss the real issues they face ‘on the ground’ when implementing research evidence in practice. This conference should be the beginning of a lasting dialogue, linking theory and practice in Bradford around tackling and understanding hate crime.”
