Hovercraft project shortlisted for national award

    10 March 09

A hovercraft project by the School of Engineering, Design and Technology (EDT) at the University of Bradford, has reached the top 3 shortlist for the 'Best Engineering Project' in a national competition run in conjunction with National Science and Engineering Week, the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB), and the British Science Association.

Judges from ETB will judge the hovercraft project at the 'Design and Build a Hovercraft in a Day' event at Grange Technology College, in Bradford, on Friday 13 March 2009.

EDT have been running successful 'Design and Build a Hovercraft in a Day' events for nine years. They are hosted in schools and universities across the UK and see students working in teams to design, build and test their own mini-hovercraft by following instructions given to them at the start of the day by staff and undergraduates from the University. One student from each team will 'pilot' their respective hovercraft at the end of the day when the event culminates in 'The Great Race' - two by two the hovercraft race across the `test track', testing the performance as well as the design skills of the students. The events are sponsored by Aimhigher, West Yorkshire and Grange Technology College.

Joanne Crowther, External Relations Officer for the University's School of EDT, said: "We are delighted that this project is gaining recognition.  It's been a huge success and a fun event which presents us with an ideal opportunity to raise awareness about engineering and science via a hands-on exciting project."
