The University of Bradford is to begin a collaborative project working with the West Yorkshire Lifelong Learning Network and other partners following their recent bid.
Proving that they are committed to providing quality vocational progression for learners to progress into higher education, the University are using this partnership to research the availability of interactive tools, programme tutorial, and guidance materials that support learners in their transition from Further Education to Higher Education to assist them with being an effective Higher Education learner. Additionally, where gaps in the current portfolio of support materials exist, they seek to develop appropriate solutions.
Lifelong Learning Networks (LLNs) are a concept introduced and funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). LLNs aim to improve the coherence, clarity and certainty of progression opportunities for vocational learners into and through higher education. LLNs will focus on demand-led curriculum developments in order to meet the higher level skills needs of employers within the region.
The University of Bradford, who have worked with WYLLN on two other projects in the past, received £98,000 for this project. The overall outputs of this project will be a suite of interactive tools and supporting programme of tutorial activities that can be used by WYLLN partner institutions (staff & students) to support the transition between Further Education and Higher Education creating more effective Higher Education learners.
WYLLN is now in its third year of operation and HEFCE and the Management Board recently approved an extension of the funding into a fourth year. A large amount of Communications Activity has taken place over the last 2 years and their aim is to strengthen the performance of West Yorkshire businesses and the wider regional economy through improved vocational and work-based progression of young people and adults into higher education.
Mohan Mistry, Vocational Progression Co-ordinator, said: "This is an exciting project, and we are delighted that WYLLN have commissioned us to do the work.
As part of the ongoing work we have done for WYLLN, we hope to harness the knowledge and expertise in this area of work from across the University. So far we have received an excellent response from staff and look forward to working with them. We will also be working with other partner Further Education and Higher Education institutions across West Yorkshire who will help us shape and develop the work through focus group meetings. I would also like to thank my colleague, Work-Based Learning Consultant Paul Spencer, who was key to writing the winning bid"
