Special Features

Engineering puts science to practical use. Mechanical Engineering combines skills needed to conceive, design and produce the moving parts, components and machinery used in every aspect of manufacture. Modern mechanical engineers use sophisticated computer-aided design and engineering skills to ensure their products are reliable, efficient and economic.

Degree Courses Available

Our BEng and MEng courses are fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for Chartered Engineer status. The MEng courses (four years full-time or five years including a placement year) involves an advanced fourth year of study, which broadens and extends your knowledge in the areas of engineering design, control, dynamics, materials, and manufacturing. Dependent on progress, transfer to the MEng is possible after two years of study on the BEng.

Mechanical Engineering

BEng (Hons)
3 years
UCAS Code: H300 BEng/ME
BEng (Hons)
4 years including work placement
UCAS Code: H301 BEng/ME4
MEng
4 years
UCAS Code: H305 MEng/ME
MEng
5 years including work placement
UCAS Code: H306 MEng/ME5

This course focuses on mechanics, design and computing. Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CADCAM) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) are covered in depth. Considerable time is spent on practical work in the laboratory, and there is an introduction to business and communication skills.

Study of the core mechanical engineering disciplines continues for the first four semesters. In the BEng final year you choose eight modules from around twenty-four; including computer-aided engineering, real-time computing and instrumentation, control systems, materials, robotics, automotive engineering, product design and innovation, and business studies. You will also complete an individual project. The extra MEng year provides further breadth and depth to your studies.

"The links the department has in Industry are a big bonus and, along with the excellent facilities, were a big reason for me choosing to come to Bradford. I looked at several other universities and Bradford was the friendliest. The university has got particulary good links with Ford and I have applied to various places for my year's placement, including Rolls-Royce."
Richard Atkins - Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical and Automotive Engineering

BEng (Hons)
3 years
UCAS Code: H330 BEng/MAE
BEng (Hons)
4 years including work placement
UCAS Code: H331 BEng/MAE4
MEng
4 years
UCAS Code: H392 MEng/MAE
MEng
5 years including work placement
UCAS Code: H393 MEng/MAE5

This course follows the same modules as Mechanical Engineering, but with an emphasis on automotive engineering and design in the final year. It focuses on mechanics, design and computing, but in the final year applying this to the understanding of complex automotive systems necessary to optimise performance, handling, emissions and economy in modern vehicles. Final-year modules cover quality engineering, vehicle dynamics, engine and powertrain, and vehicle electronics.

"The course is one of the very few anywhere where you can do both mechanical and automotive engineering . . . The practical side is a big help for future employment and the experience of a year's placement will be a big advantage when I start applying for jobs."

All BEng courses + Foundation Year

BEng (Hons)
4/5 years
UCAS Code: H101 BEng/Eng0

Those without the required qualifications can consider our engineering foundation year. This brings your mathematics and physics skills up to the level required for the normal first year of our courses. See Our Engineering Foundation page.

Mechanical and Vehicle Technology

BSc (Hons)
3 years
UCAS Code: H334 BSc/MVT
BSc (Hons)
4 years including work placement
UCAS Code: H335 BSc/MVT4

There is a strong demand from industry for graduates with the multidisciplinary skills to be able to design and build new smart systems and processes. The Vehicle Technology course combines advanced sensing and vehicle control technologies to ease the stress of driving and enhance safety and efficiency. Intelligent vehicle technologies are used to accelerate the development and availability of advanced safety and information systems applied to all types of vehicles. Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking, Anti-Brake Locking System, Steer-by-Wire, and Global Positioning System (GPS) are some of the examples of such technologies.

The development of advanced computer controllers, integrated with sophisticated electro-mechanical systems, provides modern intelligent controlled systems with the capacity to respond to their environment in an autonomous “intelligent” manner at higher speeds and accuracy.

This course received its first intake in September 2005.

Manufacturing Engineering

BEng (Hons)
(Level 3 direct entry - two years part-time)

Mechanical Engineering

MEng
(Level 3 direct entry - two years part-time)

These BEng Level 3 courses in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering are offered over two years of part-time study by the School as progression routes from the Foundation Degree Engineering Technology or other suitable Foundation Degrees, or HND with appropriate distinctions and further work-based experience. Mature students presenting other experience or qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

Distance Learning materials, combined with e-learning and short residential courses, allow you to remain in work and study at home at a place that's convenient to you. Academic studies are oriented to work-based learning activities, allowing you to complete professional training and progress toward IEng or CEng status.

Modules include: Major project; Research skills and project definition; Mechanical vibrations; Advanced design applications; Project management; Materials failure mechanics; Product design and innovation; Manufacturing planning and control; Reliability engineering and maintenance management; Quality assurance and management.

Are there any placements available?

The three- and four-year BEng and BSc courses have exactly the same academic content, with the four-year option including a one-year placement. The MEng courses can be taken over a four- or five-year period, depending on whether you take a year of industrial training.

As part of a placement year course, you will gain 12 months' practical experience as a paid employee of an approved organisation. The industrial year enables you to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems, learn about work practices and helps you to make a more informed choice of your final-year project topic and area of specialisation.

We help you obtain your industrial placement, and satisfactory completion results in the additional award of a Diploma of Industrial Studies.

How will I be assessed?

Examinations are held at the end of each semester. Those taken in the second, third and final years count towards your final degree, and your final-year project is a significant factor. In some modules, assessment is partially or wholly by coursework. If you are following a course involving industrial training, then this is also assessed, and must be completed satisfactorily.

What are the Career Prospects?

Our graduates pursue careers in all areas of engineering, automotive and manufacturing industry, but also in wider fields such as marketing, business management and public service work.

Our recent graduates went on to work for employers such as Ford, Jaguar, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and Toyota, in roles including graduate engineer, design engineer, process engineer, and CAD engineer. Our graduate employment record is recognised as being one of the best in the country, and 80% of our 2005 graduates were in employment within six months of graduating.
