We take up to 40 new undergraduates per year
100% of our 2006 graduates found employment, or went on to further study, within six months of graduating* ( see note )
* These statistics are derived from annually published data based on those UK domiciled graduates who are available for employment and further study and whose destinations are known.

The University has a long tradition of excellence and experience both in health care and in the disciplines of engineering. Our innovative degree courses in medical and healthcare technology draw on this experience, allowing you to focus on particular areas of interest to you and your career aspirations.
This course combines professional engineering knowledge and expertise with an appreciation of the functioning of the human body. It covers everything from the development of new equipment for medical diagnosis and treatment, to the implanting of biomaterials or artificial organs in the human body. It uses engineering principles to understand, modify and control biological systems, and requires a working knowledge of physiology, anatomy and biological science.
The course is offered in conjunction with the Department of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Pharmacy and the School of Health Studies, and leads to Chartered Engineer (CEng) accreditation.
The MEng year allows more advanced study of medical engineering. You can usually transfer to the MEng at the end of the first year of the standard BEng course, subject to performance. Advanced study includes a range of specialist engineering and clinically-focused modules.
"The course was very challenging, however the satisfaction
gained from the course made it all worthwhile."
Ambreen Chohan - Medical Engineering

Those without the required qualifications can consider our engineering foundation year. This brings your mathematics and physics skills up to the level required for the normal first year of our courses. See Our Engineering Foundation page.
This new BSc degree aims to provide engineers/technologists who will fulfil the role of state-registered Clinical Technologists capable of applying their knowledge to assist in the rehabilitation of patients and in the diagnosis and treatment of sickness and disability. For this course, twelve months of clinical training is required in the third year, and this is agreed with two local hospitals and will, therefore, be carried out at BRI (Bradford Royal Infirmary) and LGI (Leeds General Infirmary) for a period of six months in each hospital.
Reorganisation within the Health Service has led to the introduction of an approved accreditation and training process for staff operating either as clinical scientists, clinical engineers or clinical technologists by academic study and professional practice, either at an MSc level for scientists/engineers, or by completing an accredited BSc undergraduate degree to become a Clinical Technologist.

This is a new course from 2008, and is offered in collaboration with the School of Life Sciences. It aims to train biotechnologists with a broad mix of skills in bioscience, biochemistry, chemistry and engineering to pioneer innovative strategies and processes to advance and improve the areas to do with the synthesis of new medicines, vaccines and tissue engineering.
The three- and four-year BEng and BSc courses have exactly the same academic content, with the four-year option including a one-year placement. The MEng courses can be taken over a four- or five-year period, depending on whether you take a year of industrial training.
As part of your placement year you will spend a period of twelve months as a paid employee of an approved organisation. This experience enables you to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems, learn about work practices, and improve your career prospects.
We help you obtain your industrial placement, and satisfactory completion results in the additional award of a Diploma of Industrial Studies.
Most modules are assessed at the end of the semester, usually by a combination of formal examinations and coursework undertaken through the year.
Medical Engineering
Health authorities in the UK are among the largest employers in Europe and are supported by a large and diverse industrial sector supplying diagnostic and monitoring equipment, orthopaedic devices and artificial organs. The mix of professional engineering and health-related skills acquired will enable you to pursue a wide choice of careers in this dynamic and growing sector.
Clinical Technology
This new course is designed to facilitate students who wish to qualify as technologists with ambitions to work as technologically qualified professionals alongside medical staff within the Health Service.
"I spent my year's industrial placement last year
in Germany working for a medical engineering company in their research
and development section - looking at prosthetics. It was a good experience
and it was good to see how what we had learnt on the course was applied
in industry. I hope to do similar sorts of work once I've graduated and
after my experience in Germany I would definitely consider working abroad."
Gemma John - Medical Engineering
If you are offering any combination of GCE A levels, Vocational A levels, AS levels, and Scottish Framework qualifications, our standard offer is:
BEng 240 points
Which must include either: a) AS-level mathematics and a science A level, both with a minimum grade C; or b) A-level mathematics, minimum grade C.MEng 300 points
Including a minimum grade B in A-level mathematics. (General Studies not counted in points requirement.) In addition, students performing at MEng level at the end of the first and second year will be invited to transfer to the MEng course should they wish to do so.BSc 200 points
Must include at least one subject studied to A-level standard. We do not specify any subjects that you must offer; although a science would be useful and might include geography, biology, physics or chemistry. Your GCSE passes must include mathematics at grade C or above.Foundation Year 120 - 180 points
d epending on the subjects offered, or a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma or VCE A-level pass in a relevant subject. You must have GCSE passes (at least grade C) in both mathematics and a physical science.
