When we talk about conflict we are talking about people. As human beings, we exist in relationship. A natural result of these daily interactions is conflict. Conflict is something that is as much a part of life as the weather. Someone once said there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong type of clothes! The same is true with conflict. Conflicts will always happen. The big question relates to whether or not we allow them to control us, or whether we take control of the conflict situation.

The Chinese word for conflict is made up of two characters - Opportunity and Danger. Training in how to manage conflict gives people the skills that make them aware of the danger but also to be able to seize the opportunities. Just as nuclear power can either light up your life or destroy it, so too can conflicts either allow us to grow or crush us. Conflict resolution/management/transformation, or whatever term you choose, gives us the skills that empower us to make choices. Instead of feeling stuck, these skills help us realise that there is a way out.

Whether you are working in a school, a business, a community group or the armed forces, these are skills that will have a positive impact on your relationships with other people and therefore your work.
