CIBSE Client of the Year
On the 8 February, the University of Bradford received national recognition for its sustainable building programme. It beat off intense competition to claim the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) 'Carbon Champion of Year' award and the 'Client of the Year' award. The awards are recognition of the efforts of Estates and Facilities and its colleagues after a sustained effort at reducing carbon emissions since 2005.
The CIBSE programme judges commented of the award: "The University has a comprehensive programme which has not only reversed the previous trend of rising energy use and emissions, but reduced them by 8% since the start of the programme in 2005. The length of the programme and the commitment of the University to deliver improved building performance marked them out as the 2012 CIBSE Carbon Champion of the Year."
Electrical Consumption Chart Thumbnail Against a 2020 target of reducing our 2005/06 carbon emissions by 50%, we are currently operating at a year-to-date figure of 25% reduction which is ahead of our target. Successes already achieved and current profiling suggests we may well achieve our 50% figure within 18-24 months which will be an unprecedented success.
During weekend operation we are currently operating close to our 2020 aspiration of non-reliance on imported electricity for the City Campus, and on the 18th December 2011 we recorded a 98% reduction in purchased electricity. This was due to a combination of the CHP (Combined Heat & Power System) operation and improvements to the infrastructure aligned with a 'switch off' regime across campus.
SEC - South Elevation Thumbnail The Sustainability and Enterprise Centre (SEC) has been designed to the University's target driven sustainability specification, delivering the world's highest ever pre-construction (External) BREEAM (external link) rating of 94.95% at award. The building seeks to be the focal point in embedding sustainable living and learning within all University activities in unison with the Ecoversity vision. The building will showcase sustainable development and construction at it's best and expand the University's relationship with the wider community.
The SEC will be used for research and knowledge transfer activities and as an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 'learner' centre. It will provide facilities for ESD events (which work mainly with primary school children) and learning opportunities through the building's function and the sustainable construction that are integral to the design.

HEFCE Logo Estates and Facilities are delighted to announce that a recent application to HEFCE's Revolving Green Fund 2 has been successful. The Estates Management team played a pivotal role is securing in securing £1m from the fund for a major refurbishment of the J.B. Priestley Library. This was one of only four major awards across the sector and represents a terrific achievement for the Estates Management team.
The project will transform the library from an energy-intensive ‘E’ rated building to an ‘A’ rating that will deliver a service for future generations with minimal environmental impact. The space will also be altered to provide greater flexibility of use.
"Congratulations on being selected for funding – yours was one of only four projects to be funded under this strand. We are convinced that your project has the potential to make a significant contribution to the sector and look forward to working with you." - HEFCE
The RGF is an innovative source of funding from HEFCE which began in 2008. It is ‘revolving’ in the sense that the money saved due to greater energy efficiency is subsequently re-paid back into the fund, to then be made available for other carbon reduction projects. HEFCE awarded £20 million in the first round of the RGF3; in this round £10.8 million is available. This includes £4 million recycled from the first round plus additional funding over 2011-12 and 2012-13.

CIBSE Awards 2012 The University has been shortlisted twice in the 2012 Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers Awards:
For the sustainable Building and Carbon Management programmes. Since 2008 the University recognised it could build cost effectively in a sustainable manner. This was done by developing a target focussed sustainable specification, that was originally developed for the Emm Lane new build and subsequently developed and fine tuned for all other construction projects, included the recently opened School of Health Building (Horton A Building) that makes use of the large scale Combined Heat and Power (a system that produces green electricity) as well as the currently onsite BREEAM Outstanding SEC Building. This has been fully integrated with an ambitious carbon management plan which targets an impressive 50% reduction by 2020. The University also has an impressive portfolio of BREEAM rated buildings with some of the highest scores in the country.
EMU Project that successful collaboration project between Estates and the School of Health that proved that people could be moved in a sustainable manner and with the use of the right technology and engagement techniques achieve unprecedented energy savings. The project also gave staff and students the knowledge and tools to get the best out of a sustainable building.
The University is in impressive company, the full short list can be viewed here:

Yorkshire in Bloom
Earlier this year the University entered the Yorkshire in Bloom Competition again. In previous years we have been successful in gaining silver awards for the grounds at the School of Management Campus. For the first time both City Campus and the School of Management site were combined for judging, adding additional pressure to to the Estates departments ground staff. We are delighted to announce that this year the department were awarded a Silver Gilt from Yorkshire in Bloom within the Universities & Colleges category.
Grounds Team
The judges were very impressed by the standard of the recently completed buildings and their relationship to the older buildings within the grounds at both campuses and how the landscaping complemented the structures. The judges commented that 'the University has some very interesting features and will be a worthwhile entry for many years to come'.
Considering the amount of re-development works on both sites Silver Gilt award is an outstanding achievement for the university, and one which the ground staff team are very proud of.
Well done to the Grounds team Richard Cook, Dave Walker, Peter Winn, Paul Roper and Robert Iderson on a fantastic effort in this year's competition.
Annual Report Thumbnail The Estates and Facilities Annual Report for the financial year 2010-11 has been produced and submitted to the Buildings and Estates Committee this week for approval.
The report is a review of the activities undertaken by the department and includes data on jobs, health and safety, finance, capital projects, progress on environmental projects, space planning and ancillary services. EMU Logo
EMU (Environmental Move for U) has been shortlisted for the country's premier energy and carbon related awards. The awards are sponsored and judged by some of biggest names and companies in the industries. EMU was an innovative, effective and replicable collaboration project between Estates and the School of Health (SOH) . The target was to maximise engagement in carbon management; promote collegiality and engender well-being and to prepare and move 150 staff and 3,000 students from an 'off campus' building to a new 'GREEN' building on City Campus. To succeed where many others have failed (including ourselves) we recognised a need for an engagement project within the old building which would provide the foundation for success in the new building. This represented a challenge, a large physical area to influence and encourage sustainable behaviour from staff entering programme review. However, the project resulted in achieving unprecedented savings of 33% in the metered areas.

CHAS Logo Becoming an accredited member of CHAS (The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) demonstrates the departments compliance with important parts of Health and Safety Law (the core criteria as described in the CDM Regulations). This is an important step to improving the management of Health and Safety in the department and to maintain our accreditation will become an important part of our ongoing commitment to improving Health and Safety standards.
To become an accredited member the departments systems were assessed by an independent NEBOSH qualified Health and Safety professional.
Thanks must be expressed to all members of the department who made this possible.
The Green has been awarded the highest ever BREEAM rating for any building, at 95.05% which is the highest accredited award for sustainable development and operation. The development is the only BREEAM 'Outstanding' student accommodation in the country. The Green is a new £40 million purpose built accommodation in the heart of the city campus.
Here's how the BBC covered our initial vision for the project in 2007 .
Further to the opening of the accommodation the BBC reported again on ' the eco-friendly student village ' and interviewed Clive Wilson for a dedicated news report .
Not only do we have one of the most challenging carbon reduction targets across the sector (50% by 2020) but we are constantly making progress in achieving this target and our latest renewals of the Display Energy Certificates has shown a further improvement in performance.
For more information check out the full of list of display energy certificates here:- http://www.bradford.ac.uk/environment/performance/BuildingData/
With our CHP engine now operational and a planned roll out of further improvements to the campus infrastructure we are confident that we will become the first University to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions.
Recycling Bin
Congratulations to all of those working on the area of waste minimisation. With the recycling, composting, food waste schemes we're continuing to see some very positive results.
This year (10/11) saw a rise in recycling rates to 69% (well above target) and a fall in the amount sent to landfill by a massive 32% to 156 Tonnes. These are brilliant results.
Improvements to the waste systems have seen a 22% increase in recycling since the first year of the full recycling system (07/08) and a 48% reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill from 298 Tonnes to 156 Tonnes.
Management Team Bradford University School of Management's innovative new Emm Lane building has been recognised for its sustainability credentials in the RICS Pro Yorkshire Awards.
The award winning Sir Titus Salt building The winners of the Pro Yorkshire Awards - known as the region's property 'oscars' - were announced at a dinner on 20 May 2011 at The Pavilion, Elland Road, Leeds. The School of Management beat off competition from the University of Leeds' 'Edge' building, Bramall Learning Centre at the RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate, the Temple Avenue Project in York and four others, in the Sustainability category.
The building, opened in July 2010 by Sir Ken Morrison, includes a Harvard-style MBA suite, new social and learning spaces, a restaurant and floating staircase. It unites the School of Management's campus, formerly split into two parts, through a new two-story Atrium. The design brings together the existing Victorian buildings with modern, cutting-edge design. Architects Farrell & Clark overcame the challenges of the School's 14 acres of conservation woodland and listed buildings to achieve a BREEAM 'Excellent' environmental rating. Environmental features include a biomass boiler, energy efficient lighting, solar panels, and electric car charging facilities. Project management was carried out by Batley-based PSK Prout Tilbrook and construction by Quarmby Construction Company, based in Ilkley.
The building is part of Bradford University's "Ecoversity" initiative to minimise the university's impact on the environment and was the first building to the use the University's sustainability specification concentrating on building physics rather than rely on eco-bling. Bradford is currently 7th in the "Green League" which measures the environmental impact of universities.
At last night's Ecoversity Awards held at the Norcroft Centre, Estates and Facilities won the Gold Award in the Green Impact League.
Big congratulations to the following team members who worked hard to achieve this achievement:
Steve Clayson, Maria Fernandez, Doreen Foster, Andrew Hickey, Frances Johnson, Sylvia Lang, John Llewellyn, Chris Mudd and Peter Winn.
Russell Smith, Estates Manager - Engineering and Building recently spoke at a Good Campus Event focusing on digital dashboards and displays with a focus on energy and environmental performance. Sharing the stage for the presentation was Hilary Pape, a lecturer from the School of Health Studies who provided a 'non-technical' users perspective. Their presentation can be downloaded here.

Waste Rocket The Rocket is now in full swing and is fully operating, producing some excellent quality compost. It has taken us a little while to get it working to this level, and it wouldn¿t have been possible without the excellent Rocket Team involved, in particular Bob- our main rocket man on main campus- and Mick and Trevor at the School of Management.
The Rocket Team have dedicated a lot of time and effort into getting the Rocket fully functioning again after a brief period of being under the weather! Food waste which fuels the Rocket is currently collected from catering areas such as the Atrium canteen and Student Central bars, and at the moment, we are trialling collections from Phoenix North East, Phoenix South West and communal areas in Student Central. An equal amount of woodchip to food waste is added to the Rocket, and after 14 days of being churned through the machine, out pops the home-made compost. After a month of maturing it is ready to be used on the grounds by the gardeners.
We would like to congratulate and thank the Rocket Team for all their hard work and effort!
