Objectives

The University allows and encourages academics to engage in consultancy as part of their Knowledge Transfer activities. To support this work, the University offers administrative support to all consultancy.

The key objectives for the University are:

Maximise consultancy within the agreed limits defined by the University regulations such that this work is beneficial to the individual, the academic schools, and the University.
Provide efficient management & administrative support to consultancy.
Ensure that the procedures as outlined in Regulation 29 of the University are adhered to by all individuals undertaking consultancy.
All PRIVATE consultancy is undertaken in accordance with the procedures as outlined in Regulation 29, specifically (but not limited to) prior approval of the Head of Department and liability disclaimer statements provided by the consultant to the University.

Available Support

(Support is not available to staff when they are undertaking private consultancy.)

Support for consultancy will include (but not be limited by):
- contract negotiation (terms and conditions, confidentiality, intellectual property);
- financial control; administration; quotations; invoicing & payment;
- professional indemnity and liability insurance;
- training;
- marketing;
- quality assurance.
Prior approval from the Dean of School or delegate for all consultancy work is essential

Definitions

Consultancy is paid outside work (not including normal academic / professional activities see below) undertaken under the auspices of the University of Bradford or its wholly owned trading companies.
Private consultancy is paid outside work carried out by a member of staff in a private capacity where the University will not, under any circumstances accept liability or responsibility for the work or any advice given in connection with it.
Prior approval is required from the member of staffs Dean of School or delegate for both consultancy and private consultancy. No consultancy can be undertaken without first gaining this approval, and failure to seek approval can be regarded as a breach of the staff members employment contract.
Normal academic / professional activities are not considered to be part of consultancy and are excluded from the requirement of prior approval of the Dean of School and includes: Writing academic books; External examining; Refereeing and editing academic journals; Acting as a Quality Assurance Agency auditor or subject reviewer; Acting as external assessor/adviser for chair/other senior appointments at other universities/colleges; Occasional lectures and broadcasts; Unpaid voluntary work.
