Overview of LSS Regulations

Things you need to know and observe

Health, safety and security

University Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations bind all staff and students. In particular, your use of all Information Technology at Bradford is covered by Regulation 20 on use of Library facilities and Regulation 21 on use of University IT facilities and the campus network. Copies can be found on the Learner Support Services website.

Some important points to note are:

Users are responsible for their computer account, which should only be used for the purpose for which it was allocated (ie for academic purpose) and only by the person authorised to use it. It is your responsibility to ensure that no one else knows your password.
Your registration card is not transferable: do not lend it to anyone.
University IT facilities are NOT to be used for private work. Use of University facilities for financial or commercial gain requires prior written permission.
YoumustnotconsumefoodonFloors02, 1and2intheJBPriestleyBuilding, and only cold drinks in sports bottled are allowed on these floors. Smoking is forbidden in all Learner Support Services areas.
Sending of chain email, playing of games and the use of chat services are not allowed.
Mobile phones may only be used in accordance with published regulations.
Talking in areas designated as ‘Silent' is forbidden.

NB penalties will be imposed upon offenders.

The Law and External Regulations

Some aspects of misuse are covered by the law, in particular the Data Protection Act 1998, the Computer Misuse Act 1990, and the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988. The latter (and the related CHEST Code of Conduct on Use of Software and Datasets) includes measures intended to prevent illegal copying or use of software.

Transmitting, storing or displaying offensive or harassing material is strictly against Learner Support Services regulations and the University code of practice on personal harassment. Some of these activities constitute a breach of the law, in which case appropriate action will be taken. Your use of IT facilities and the network may be monitored to investigate breaches of Regulations and the law.

Use of national and international networks (such as the Internet) is covered by the (External) JANET Acceptable Use Policy .

Health, Safety and Security

Do:

Report any case of theft to Learner Support Services staff immediately: they will call the Security Service.
Report any case of accident or injury to Learner Support Services staff immediately: first aid will be summoned.
Report any case of suspicious or unreasonable behaviour to Learner Support Services staff immediately: action will be taken.
Take regular breaks and familiarise yourself with the Display Screen Equipment regulations outlined in the document ‘Keeping Healthy While Using a PC' available on the web.

Do Not:

Ignore fire alarms: you must leave the building immediately by the nearest exit and make your way to the nearest assembly point.
Leave handbags and wallets unattended, even for a few minutes.
Use a PC continuously for more than 2 hours.

Emergency Procedures

Familiarise yourself with the locations of the emergency exits - they are clearly marked.
When the fire alarm sounds, leave the building immediately. Failure to do so is a disciplinary offence - you are putting your own life and the lives of others at risk. Disabled users should wait at the refuge points for assistance.
Never stay to collect books or save your work when the alarms sound. Leave immediately.
Ignoring a fire alarm will cost you money - £150.00. Users failing to evacuate will be fined.
People with impaired hearing may be unaware of the alarm. Alert them to the emergency as you leave.
After evacuating the building in an emergency, go immediately to the nearest Fire Assembly point. Do not congregate by the entrance.
