Wayne Brown Wayne Brown, Full-Time MBA 2004

A Bradford MBA gets your foot in the door for top management jobs, according toWayneBrown, aged33, whoisamanageratATKearney, amanagementconsulting firm which operates in 33 countries globally.

Wayne, who completed a full-time MBA in 2004, has interests in service areas such as operations improvement with a particular focus on public sector issues.

Local man Wayne, who was born in Castleford, had studied part-time for his first degree at university and decided to take a career break from his former employer of Halifax Bank of Scotland to study for his MBA.

"As my degree had been part-time, I had never really experienced being part of a full-time cohort. I also wanted to test my professional capability - the MBA is a professional degree at the end of the day and, from the experience I had gained and from my first degree, I wanted to take things up another level. I was certainly tested and stretched by the MBA and am very pleased I did it," Wayne explained.

"Bradford is a great brand in terms of its business school and is one of the best of its kind in England. As someone who needed to remain in West Yorkshire, I looked at all the business schools across the North of England and there was no question for me that Bradford had to be the one I chose.

"It has a great reputation for both teaching and research and that is certainly what I found when I spent my year at the School of Management.

"The stand-out benefit of the MBA is the academic knowledge obtained from focused study on defined areas. Also, the processes of studying and report writing required a high standard of analytical rigour" he said.

"I believe a good MBA is critical to entering management consulting at an Associate level. It gets you a seat at the table, then it is up to you to use the skills you have gained to convince the firm that you are the type of person they want. Without an MBA, it is very hard to get the opportunity to showcase yourself. Of course, an MBA also gives a solid grounding in the core skills of management consulting - particularly the analytics.

"Since my MBA, I have managed many projects in the public sector. A key role was managing a major programme for a UK IT provider in a large government department. The programme comprised of multiple workstreams and required the management of a considerable number of resources.

"I would remind potential MBA students that learning is not just limited to the classroom - learn as much as you can from your co-students. The friendships I made are still going strong and your co-students will stay friends with you for life."
