Strategic Information Systems

AIMS

Information systems are important resources for modern organisations and are crucial for their survival. This module aims to develop strategic awareness of the role of information systems in organisations. It explains the nature, role and deployment of information systems. It also explains the need for strategic changes and alignment between organisational and information systems related strategies.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
On successful completion of this module you will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of business information systems, the process of acquiring them and the contextual complexities of their use.

2. Subject-Specific Skills:
On successful completion of this module you will be able to demonstrate an in-depth awareness of business needs for business information systems and appropriate methods and approaches of their planning.

3. Personal Transferable Skills:
On successful completion of this module you will be able to analyse the strategic organisational needs and requirements for IS and make appropriate decisions surrounding the deployment of IS solutions

OUTLINE SYLLABUS

The syllabus aims to develop a student’s understanding of how information systems can help an organisation to yield greater value from its information resources. It covers the following aspects:

• Detailed understanding of information (Nature, quality and characteristics of information) and systems thinking (Systematic approach to making sense of organisations and computer systems).
• Critical understanding of different types of information systems (Different levels and types of information systems used in organisations and, the integration between them).
• Critical understanding of information systems led change in organisations (Different approaches to organisational change and ways of dealing with consequences of such change).
• Strategic understanding of the role of information management, knowledge management and information systems strategies in deployment of information systems (A detailed focus on different strategies and approaches used in their creation). Also, a look at information systems planning frameworks and tools.

MODULE LEADER

Dr. Zahid Hussain
Zahid completed his first degree, in management, at Bradford. He then did an MSc in information systems at Huddersfield (EPRSC funded), and a PhD in computation at Manchester (UMIST). Subsequently, he achieved an MSc in HRM and an MA in teaching and learning. His work at various private and public sector organisations has included business change manager at a manufacturing company and technical/business consultant at a software house.
