Our challenge

PACE is a leading international developer of digital TV technologies for the global payTV industry, with its global headquarters in the UK.  Since its inception in 1982 PACE has grown to be a field leader with offices in Florida, Hong Kong, France and India.  It has been the launch partner for more than 20 pay services worldwide, including BskyB in the UK and FOXTEL in Australia.  PACE came to us seeking a programme which would give their international senior management team a better understanding of finance.

Our challenge was that the PACE senior management team, all of whom either already had some financial responsibility or who would assume that responsibility in the future, had limited prior recognized/prescribed training in finance.  It was essential that their knowledge of finance be developed, in particular in the areas of risk assessment and cash flow management. The groups of managers that participated in the programme from the US, France and the UK included:

Approach and delivery

Our team identified that the core challenge presented by the PACE consultation was to develop a flexible, culturally-sensitive programme which could be delivered in various locations around the globe, and one which could grow with PACE.  Bringing such a large number of key managers together in one place and at one time for group training was not feasible so it was essential that training be replicated and that although a consistent approach be maintained throughout by our tutors, the programme also be reflective and receptive to the specific demands of different locations.

As PACE is a global organization we had to develop a tailored global programme to match its needs. Our programme was delivered in the US, France and its headquarters in the UK, and consisted of:

In total we delivered our customized Finance for Non-Financial Managers programme to 6 cohorts of separate specialist management teams within PACE.  The programme ran from September 2007 to June 2009.

Success of the programme

Upon completion, PACE were so pleased with the results of the programme and our depth of understanding of their business that they immediately commissioned us to develop a customized accredited management development programme for their senior management team. The PACE management development programme began in December 2009 and will culminate in a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration – the first third of an MBA.

“Pace is committed to empowering our employees. With the restructuring of our business into Customer Support Teams and Customer Account Teams, we uncovered a key development need to enhance senior management’s expertise around business financials, enabling them to run their own P&L and better appreciate how we create a return for our shareholders. The course focussed on understanding of how to construct a P&L, turning sales activity into profit and becoming more ‘data-driven’.

We’re fortunate to have one of the UK’s leading management schools in the city and Bradford University proved its breadth of teaching knowledge. We were impressed by its ability to tailor the courses specifically for Pace.

Pace was born in Bradford, we’ve remained here as we’ve become a world-beating technology firm. We’re proud of our heritage and are committed to investing in strengthening ties with local organisations and supporting local communities.” Ian Kydd, Head of L&D
