You are here: Management | Services to business | Working with students
The School of Management prides itself on the many ways in which we encourage our students to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviour needed to succeed in today's challenging economic environment. To do this effectively we place a high priority on employer involvement in many aspects of our activities with students.
There are several ways in which you can work with our students and graduates
We run focused events such as Careers Fairs and Employer presentations that are designed to promote your business and its opportunities in the most cost effective way.
Your can promote your company to students and graduates here on campus at the School of Management. We can facilitate presentations to suit your needs - it could be formal or informal, held during the day or in the evening, include refreshments, equipment - whatever you need we will organise the resources and discuss advertising strategies with you.
A programme of workshops is held every semester for the different groups of students - undergraduates, post graduates and MBA's.
They all cover a wide range of topics including job search, recruitment and selection methods and managing your career. A common theme in all of our skills workshops is the opportunity to involve 'real' recruiters in delivering the training. This is always appreciated by our students who continually rate employer-led workshops highly.
Sessions last one to two hours and we can target our advertising to specific groups of students to ensure a relevant audience, if required. Examples in the past have included sessions on skills such as team-building, project management, presentations, leadership; as well as those focused on job-seeking skills such as CV writing, selection interviews and assessment centres.
Mentoring has become increasingly popular both in education and the workplace with projects across the UK offering support and encouragement to mentees in a variety of settings.
It is also well established that many successful people have benefited from the support of a mentor. Allegedly, Richard Branson was mentored by the late Freddie Laker (British airline entrepreneur and pioneer of 'no frills' air travel) and Oprah Winfrey was mentored by Maya Angelou (poet and writer).
The Career Mentoring Scheme is a voluntary partnership where a mentor (employer) offers to share his/her expertise with a mentee (student) in order to provide practical support and encouragement. It is a non-judgemental partnership, based on mutual trust and confidentiality, which encourages both parties to benefit and learn from each other's experiences.
Mentoring is a powerful tool for development where the mentor supports the mentee to manage their own learning by setting personal goals and working towards achieving positive change. The mentor often plays a crucial part in the development of the mentees employability skills by helping them to understand the workplace, thus giving them a competitive edge in the graduate labour market.
Previous mentees and mentors have confirmed that involvement is mutually rewarding as it offers exceptional scope for the personal and professional development of both parties. Additionally mentors value the opportunity to give something back to the community.
