The Effective Learning Service

Effective Learning Service Our Effective Learning Service can help you to develop effective techniques for learning. You may, for example, be uncertain how to structure or reference an essay or written report. You may need help with time management, managing your reading or preparing an effective presentation. Our Effective Learning Service can help you to succeed.

The service has produced a series of workbooks - on topics ranging from accelerated learning to research methods - which are available in printed and electronic forms.

The Effective Learning office runs weekly workshops and offers confidential daytime or evening appointments to students who prefer more individual attention.

The School's Effective Learning Advisor, Martin Sedgley, can be contacted on M.T.Sedgley@bradford.ac.uk , or through the web at http://www.bradford.ac.uk/management/els

Foreign-language courses

Language skills can significantly enhance your career opportunities and earning potential, and are useful if you plan to spend part of your course abroad. They are also a valuable tool in the development of your communication skills.

Subject to demand, we offer you the chance to follow business language courses in French, German, Spanish and Japanese. As you would expect, our language courses focus on practical skills.

English-language support

If you have met our language requirements but would still like to improve your English language and study skills, we offer a six-week Academic English for Business and Management course over the summer, specially designed for international students who plan to study for an MBA or MSc at the School of Management.

The course, run by the University of Bradford Language Unit, includes tuition on skills such as listening, note taking, using the library, using sources and references, academic reading, seminar participation, giving oral presentations, academic writing, grammar, vocabulary building, pronunciation, social and cultural orientation, getting to know Bradford, discussion techniques, examination techniques, and grammar revision and development.

The course can make up the shortfall if you have narrowly failed to achieve the English-language standards we require (if, for example, you have an IELTS score of 6, rather than 6.5).

More information on the course is available by e-mailing langunit@bradford.ac.uk .

The Language Unit continues to support international students throughout the academic year with an ongoing programme of English courses. These include weekly courses in grammar, speech work, academic writing and discussion.
