Student Life

Arts on Campus

The arts are valued at Bradford as part of the overall educational provision and there is an art gallery, theatre and music centre on campus.

The Arts on Campus brochure is published regularly to keep you informed of what's on. To give you guidance and leadership are highly qualified professionals, known as Fellows/Artistic Directors, in the fields of Music and Theatre, as well as Writer-in-Residence.

Music

Tasmin Little Whether you're into jazz, classical music or African drumming, there are numerous opportunities for you to become involved in music-making.

The Tasmin Little Music Centre is the centre for live music making on campus and it is here that you'll find the wind orchestra, string orchestra, recorder group, jazz band, University orchestra, Small World Band, University singers and Bradford University Society of Operettas and Musicals (BUSOM).

There are regular courses and workshops in improvisation and rhythm as well as drop-in beginner sessions. If you are looking for individual voice or instrument lessons, then we have a list of approved teachers, and lessons are held at the Centre. Everyone is welcome and the emphasis is always on making live music and having fun. If you prefer to just listen then the free lunchtime concerts by visiting musicians provide a welcome break in the middle of the day. Recent performances include an Opera Gala, Acoustic Soul and Tromboni Bomboni (avant-garde trombone and didgeridoo).

Theatre

Theatre in the Mill

The Theatre in the Mill is a busy professional studio theatre that receives whose from best the young dynamic touring companies. Many shows come fresh from the Edinburgh Festival or a London run. We work with a number of partners in the region, providing theatre skills training in as many ways as possible.

Performers and backstage crew can get involved in productions and Bradford University Theatre Group (BUTG) performs two or three shows a term at the Mill, producing the whole show from direction and acting to set design. There is also a range of workshops provided at Theatre in the Mill regularly in writing, directing and acting, and as with everything at the Mill, these are open to absolutely everyone over the age of 16.

Gallery II

Visual Arts

We have a long-standing policy at Bradford of promoting interest in the visual arts and have a permanent collection of over four hundred artworks displayed around the campus. On the main campus, Gallery II is a base for touring contemporary visual arts shows including many local and up-and-coming artists. Next door at Bradford College there is also a Gallery and Craft Centre showing the work of both students and professional artists.
