Internships give you the opportunity of spending a period of time in a ‘proper’ job with an organisation, giving you the chance to gain vocationally relevant work experience and training. There are various schemes which run at different times of the year, but most internships are offered during the summer vacations.
They are the next best thing to a sandwich year or placement and the experience looks great on your CV. They are also the ideal way of finding out if you are really suitable for the career you have chosen and, most importantly, whether you like the work or not!
Many organisations see their internships schemes as the first round of selection for their graduate schemes. If you do well with them, then you can often be fast-tracked through their usual recruitment and selection.
Most of the sources listed in the Graduate Recruitment Specialists section will also give details of internships.

Many employers need extra temporary staff at certain times of the year to help cope with increased business, emergencies, holidays etc. This kind of work is available during all of the vacations and in most parts of the country. You might have to be prepared to do routine jobs, sometimes involving shift work or unsociable hours but, remember, all experience can be made to look good on a CV.
If you want to work locally, check out the information in the Part Time Work section as many of these organisations will also offer vacation work.
