Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught Courses

Written by Dr Roger Clarke

Engineering is fundamental to economic and social prosperity. It is the profession responsible for the creation of all the material objects and systems necessary for modern life, from concept to customer to decommissioning.

The School of Engineering, Design & Technology offers taught FdEng, BSc, BEng, MEng and MSc programmes in the main engineering disciplines, most of which are fully accredited by their respective professional bodies. The completion of appropriate accredited programmes can lead in due course  to an individual gaining Chartered Engineer (CEng) status and hence gain the professional standing (and salary) associated with this. Further details of accredited programmes  can be seen in the links below.

Our programmes contain a high level of practical work using the School’s well-equipped laboratories and CAD facilities  in which students gain crucial skills and knowledge, which are key to enhancing graduate career prospects. This, in combination with the opportunity to do industrial placements, makes the School a major contributor to the University’s position as being 16th in the UK for graduate employment.

The school is organised into seven  Programme Teams ,   each offering a portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes associated with their engineering disciplines:

.

sm-bullet Mechanical and Automotive Engineering

sm-bullet Electronics and Telecommunications

sm-bullet Civil Engineering

sm-bullet Chemical Engineering

sm-bullet Medical and Healthcare Technology

sm-bullet Design

sm-bullet Technology Management

Find out more about our Undergraduate , Postgraduate and Research programmes here.

The school also offers an  Engineering Foundation Year , which is applicable to any of the disciplines above and is available to prospective students who don’t quite meet the academic requirements to enter an engineering programme directly into first year.

For prospective students who have already gained an HND and are currently working, but who would like to continue to gain a BEng; there is a Bridging Programme which on completion would permit a student to progress to the part-time BEng programme in the Electrical or Mechanical Engineering disciplines.

Prospective students who have gained and HNC in an appropriate subject could join (with advance standing) the part-time  Foundation Degree , which again can lead to progression to the part-time BEng programme.

Find out more about our Part-time Programmes and Continuing Professional Development here.

The school also offers franchised and dual-award engineering degree programmes serving the needs of students in South and South-East Asia through our International Collaborative Programmes .
