Gemma John - Helping people who need hip replacements

Gemma John graduated in 2001 from the University of Bradford with a BEng in Medical Engineering . Gemma who is originally from Peterborough is now employed by De Puy in their Leeds office as a Bio Engineer for Hips. she is involved in product development engineering and designing new products and regularly works with surgeons to identify customer/patient requirements which involves generating design inputs for product specifications.

When asked why medical engineering? Gemma replied; “It was the first course of its kind in the UK, and everyone knows someone with a hip replacement…. I was inspired to become involved in medical engineering . ”

Whilst at university Gemma was active in the medical engineering society. “ I will always remember Bradford fondly - I made a lot of good friends and have settled up north now. Bradford university gave me the opportunity to have links to industry and professional bodies (such as the IMechE) that have helped me through the early stages of my career and I still maintain relationships today with contacts made during my year in industry.” In future, I would like to continue to progress my career with key research within Orthopaedic industry.
