Ummer Daraz - The Foundation Year in Engineering

Written by  Ms Joanne Crowther

Ummer Daraz - The Foundation Year in Engineering One of EDT’s best performing foundation year students, Ummer Daraz impressed lecturers with his overall grades during his foundation year at the University when he scored an average of 83.5% overall.

Ummer had a lifelong dream to become an engineer, having always been fascinated with how things work and regularly dismantled old radios as a boy in Hong Kong where he grew up. “When I was twelve, I made some headphones from an old radio” Ummer said; “I have always been practical and really enjoy problem solving, so I’m really happy to be finally embarking upon a course which will lead to a career in engineering.”

Ummer began his working life in banking, working as a mortgage advisor for Yorkshire Bank and then setting up on his own, but this work was not what he really wanted to do. Now married, with two children he has become good at balancing his life, “University taught me the importance of time management,” said Ummer, “I always set aside time to study and make sure I have time for my part-time work as well as my family.”

Ummer wanted to do civil engineering but he didn’t have the appropriate qualifications. He found out about the Foundation Year at the University of Bradford via the web. “ The Foundation Year provides students with the maths and science they need to study any engineering degree and is particularly useful for students who don’t hold the right qualifications in the required subjects .” Said Jonathan Philby, Foundation Programme Manager and Director of Studies.

Ummer particularly enjoyed the Foundation Year which is designed with engineering in mind. He enjoyed the problem solving module and experimental lab sessions. “I liked the questions and the problem-solving, it reminded me of Suduko!”
