ICT Information for New Students

Logging On and OFF EDT PCs

The PCs in EDT computer rooms have been set up specifically for use within EDT. Due to various system requirements we run a system that is independent of the LSS IT services systems. We do, however, synchronise Usernames and Passwords between the 2 entities. As a result the logging on process should be very similar.

To ‘Log On’ to EDT PCs:

Press ‘CTRL’, ‘ALT’ and ‘DELETE’ together, as prompted by the screen.

1. In the window that appears you will be asked to input:

· Username

Enter your University of Bradford Username

· Password

Enter your University of Bradford Password

When complete press enter.

NOTE :

Please ensure that it says ‘Log on to: soe’ below that username and password boxes

To ‘Log Off’ EDT PCs follow the procedure outlined below:

1. Press ‘CTRL’, ‘ALT’ and ‘DELETE’ together.

2. In the window that appears simply select the 'logoff' button.

1. Click the 'start' button and select 'Log Off'.

NOTE:

1. You MUST Log Off at the end of each session or other people will have access to the work in your directories.

2. You must NOT save work onto the Local Hard Disk Drives (i.e. C:\, D:\). These systems are rebuilt regularly and thus saved work will be lost. If you must save your work on the disk save it in the 'C:\scratch' directory and then copy it to your network directory or other media before you logoff.

3. If you have any problems logging onto EDT computer systems please contact the EDT ICT Support Team (see Getting Help with ICT Issues) .

Printing Facilities

EDT uses the same print management system as LSS, a summary is provided below.

Printing and photocopying are done on the same multifunction machines:

1. Credit your account via the pay station in any of the libraries

2. Login to the machine with your student ID card and Library PIN to either photocopy or select the job you want to print

You can print/copy/scan on the EDT MFDs located in the open access area:

Outside C1-25 (Colour); Outside C2.32 (Colour); Outside B2-30 (Mono);

Outside B3-30 (Colour) and inside C3-09a (Mono).

You can also print to the photocopiers in the libraries, as well as using the LSS self-service printers. A4 and A3 print jobs can be submitted to the photocopiers. The devices can print both black and white and colour print jobs. To send print jobs:

· For Monochrome printing choose: EDT-STU-BLK-A3A4-D or Library Printer

· For colour printing choose : EDT-STU-CLR-A3A4-D or Library Printer Copier

Printing will default to duplex (double-sided) and photocopying will default to single-sided, unless otherwise specified.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) team provide IT services appropriate to the School of Engineering, Design & Technology in teaching and research activities, supported by regular renewal and enhancement.

Services include: a high quality physical infrastructure (networks, servers, computer clusters, etc.); support of individual desktops, teaching and research clusters; file storage; print services, remote file access and WEB services.

What you must do First

The very first thing you MUST do before you can use any of the computing facilities on campus or in the EDT is to complete the enrolment process.

As part of this process you should be given a Student ID card, a username, an e-mail address and you should also set your own password.

As one of the largest users of computing equipment on the campus the School of Engineering, Design & Technology boasts a considerable number of desktops for student use.

The main computing suite is based in the Chesham building where we have in excess of 250 PCs configured with that applications necessary for course delivery and student project work.

Our secondary site is in the Richmond Laboratory Block, and as the name would suggest, these are more 'specific' machines required for demonstartions and interactions with many of the peripheral electronic kits (e.g. robot programmers) used for course delivery and project work.

Virus protection

Are you having problems with viruses? Random shutdowns, Internet slowing down with no explanation?

You might be getting pop-ups suggesting you’re infected and offering to clean your system for a fee. So called ‘fake’ virus checkers are rife, and often carry other infections that hand control of your system to a 3rd party. Don’t rely on ‘free’ virus checkers.

We can check your system and install a virus checker for £50. 3 pcs or laptops for £100.

As we are a School for Engineering, Design and Technology we have quite a large portfolio of leading edge applications that are used as part of the studies undertaken on virtually all of the courses run in EDT.

Many of these applications are also market leaders and as such represent the tools that many graduates will be expected to use when they start their postgraduate careers.
