About the University of Bradford

Our Mission - Making Knowledge Work

A Brief History

In 1882 when we began as Bradford Technical College, Bradford was the textile capital of the world, its renowned products reaching the four corners of the globe. Today, our world-class teaching reaches out to those same four corners, bringing students from over 110 nations together in one place of learning excellence.

Innovative from the start, the University's forebear, The Mechanics Institute, founded in 1832. was formed in response to the need in the city for workers with cutting-edge skills relevant to the workplace. In 1957 Bradford Institute of Technology was established to take over the higher education role of the Bradford Technical College. This heritage of making knowledge work has continued to the present day as we continue to respond to the needs of employers and proudly boast being the number one university for graduate employment in the north of England and number two in the UK.

In 1966, Bradford Institute of Technology was granted a Royal Charter to become the University of Bradford and the 40th university to be created in Britain, making us one of the 'old' universities. Harold Wilson, the then British Prime Minister, became our first Chancellor and the University began to grow steadily, increasing student numbers and the range of vocationally relevant courses on offer. Bradford is now a more popular choice then ever for students who want to give their career the best possible start. The student population has leapt from 2,000 in 1966 to over 10,000 people today, including a lively postgraduate population of 2,250.

We have always been pioneering in our course provision, being the first British University to offer a Peace Studies degree and to set up a modern Business School and the first UK University outside London to offer part time degree courses. New courses have been founded in response to an ever-changing landscape of educational needs. Many of these are interdisciplinary in character such as Environmental Science, Technology and Management, and Interdisciplinary Human Studies. Others, such as Computer Games Design, Forensic Science and Medical Engineering, keep pace with scientific development and the needs of employers.

The University Today and in the Future

We have over 140 courses at undergraduate level, many of them unique, and 15 of our subject areas were listed in the top 20 subjects in the UK in The Guardian League Tables 2005 with Biosciences ranking 3rd after Oxford and Cambridge. Bradford leapt 23 places in the overall university rankings to become 31st best university in the UK and No 1 in West Yorkshire.

We have retained our position as the No1 University in the North of England for graduate employability, and are now 2nd in the UK (Times Good University Guide 2006). Our Management School hosts the 2nd best Master's in Management programme in the UK and 5th best in Europe (Financial Times 2005). Our league table rankings are a strong indication of our ambition to deliver the best 'student experience' for today's world. Our 40th anniversary year (2006) will be an exciting time on campus as we push ahead with plans to create an even more sociable and cutting-edge campus. Around £75m will be invested in this ambitious project, which will create more social space for students and a new heart to the already lively campus.

A new conference and exhibition centre and impressive new glazed main entrance to the Richmond Building will create spaces for concerts and large events. The different areas of our educational village will be linked by glazed walkways with gardens and courtyards to relax in. The recently opened £2.3m Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation, which acts as a focus for international research in drug design and development, is housed in a stunning glass building which has recently won an award for environmentally aware design. Soon to accompany this will be the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics that will place Bradford right at the forefront of this globally important field.

Our dynamic e-strategy means that we are constantly making technological advances on campus, creating numerous wireless areas. Developments are led by users' requirements and aim to link people, information and communication to give flexibility and ensure that students and staff enjoy the benefi ts of up-to-the-minute digital information technology.
