Welcome to the January 2008 edition of News & Views

It's been an eventful two months since the last edition during which the University saw its Chancellor Imran Khan arrested and detained during the period of emergency rule in Pakistan.

In response to this, the University launched a campaign to see him freed. Find out how it went on page 6.

The University has also been actively engaging with staff, students and visitors recently. We've seen activities on campus for Enterprise Week 2007 (see pages 4 and 5), Occupational Therapy Week 2007 (see page 7), and of course there has been the winter graduation ceremonies which saw four honorary graduations plus the first fire station officers to graduate from the foundation degree in Leadership and Management (see page 9).

There's an in-depth report from Professor Rae Earnshaw on how the University is embracing technology to improve learning, teaching, research and administration (pages 10 and 11), and a profile of Sue Edgley, Director of the University's Sports Centre (pages 12 to 15).

The Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation celebrated great success recently when, in collaboration with a research partner in France, Drs Frank Leusen and John Kendrick made a major advance in the prediction of crystal structures in small organic molecules (page 16) - a feat that got them into premier science journal Nature.

Professor Andrew Day discusses 25 years of professional accreditation in the School of Engineering, Design and Technology on page 20, and Professor Fun Hu talks about her role as the Yorkshire Forward-sponsored chair for wireless technologies on page 21.

As the winter frost bites and the nights are at their shortest, we wish our students good luck with their first semester exams and look forward to warmer times. Until the Spring.
