25% Reduction in Carbon Generation!

Electrical Consumption Chart Thumbnail   Against a 2020 target of reducing our 2005/06 carbon emissions by 50%, we are currently operating at a year-to-date figure of 25% reduction which is ahead of our target. Successes already achieved and current profiling suggests we may well achieve our 50% figure within 18-24 months which will be an unprecedented success.

During weekend operation we are currently operating close to our 2020 aspiration of non-reliance on imported electricity for the City Campus, and on the 18th December 2011 we recorded a 98% reduction in purchased electricity. This was due to a combination of the CHP (Combined Heat & Power System) operation and improvements to the infrastructure aligned with a 'switch off' regime across campus.

Creating a Buzz on Campus

The Telegraph and Argus Newspaper recently ran an article on bee keeping in the city of Bradford and in particularly at the University.

"The arrival of 30,000 bees in a purpose-built hive enclosure at the top of an ampitheatre on the university campus is helping to sustain the bee population and the subsequent survival of our plants and crops, as well as adding to biodiversity." - Telegraph and Argus

Local Recognition of Department's Efforts

Sustainable construction and carbon reduction acknowledged in the local newspaper:

"We don’t make enough fuss of one of the most impressive enterprises in the country and it’s only a few hundred metres from the city centre. The University of Bradford is a world leader on many fronts, with its pioneering work on Peace Studies and its championing of sustainable living."

"It’s not necessary for students to attend sustainability lectures – they just have to potter about the campus where they will be seriously influenced by the buildings, the practices and the commitment." - Telegraph & Argus

HEFCE Revolving Green Fund Award

HEFCE Logo Estates and Facilities are delighted to announce that a recent application to HEFCE's Revolving Green Fund 2 has been successful. The Estates Management team played a pivotal role is securing in securing £1m from the fund for a major refurbishment of the J.B. Priestley Library. This was one of only four major awards across the sector and represents a terrific achievement for the Estates Management team.

The project will transform the library from an energy-intensive ‘E’ rated building to an ‘A’ rating that will deliver a service for future generations with minimal environmental impact. The space will also be altered to provide greater flexibility of use.

"Congratulations on being selected for funding – yours was one of only four projects to be funded under this strand. We are convinced that your project has the potential to make a significant contribution to the sector and look forward to working with you." - HEFCE

The RGF is an innovative source of funding from HEFCE which began in 2008. It is ‘revolving’ in the sense that the money saved due to greater energy efficiency is subsequently re-paid back into the fund, to then be made available for other carbon reduction projects. HEFCE awarded £20 million in the first round of the RGF3; in this round £10.8 million is available. This includes £4 million recycled from the first round plus additional funding over 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Client of the Year

For the sustainable Building and Carbon Management programmes. Since 2008 the University recognised it could build cost effectively in a sustainable manner. This has been fully integrated with an ambitious carbon management plan which targets an impressive 50% reduction by 2020. The University also has an impressive portfolio of BREEAM rated buildings with some of the highest scores in the country.
