CHAS Logo Becoming an accredited member of CHAS (The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) demonstrates the departments compliance with important parts of Health and Safety Law (the core criteria as described in the CDM Regulations). This is an important step to improving the management of Health and Safety in the department and to maintain our accreditation will become an important part of our ongoing commitment to improving Health and Safety standards.
To become an accredited member the departments systems were assessed by an independent NEBOSH qualified Health and Safety professional.

The Green has been awarded the highest ever BREEAM rating for any building, at 95.05% which is the highest accredited award for sustainable development and operation. The development is the only BREEAM 'Outstanding' student accommodation in the country. The Green is a new £40 million purpose built accommodation in the heart of the city campus.

Further to the opening of the accommodation the BBC reported again on ' the eco-friendly student village ' and interviewed Clive Wilson for a dedicated news report .
SEC - South Elevation Thumbnail The Sustainability and Enterprise Centre (SEC) has been designed to the University's target driven sustainability specification, delivering the world's highest ever pre-construction (External) BREEAM (external link) rating of 94.95% at award. The building seeks to be the focal point in embedding sustainable living and learning within all University activities in unison with the Ecoversity vision. The building will showcase sustainable development and construction at it's best and expand the University's relationship with the wider community.
The SEC will be used for research and knowledge transfer activities and as an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 'learner' centre. It will provide facilities for ESD events (which work mainly with primary school children) and learning opportunities through the building's function and the sustainable construction that are integral to the design.

EMU (Environmental Move for U) has been shortlisted for the country's premier energy and carbon related awards. The awards are sponsored and judged by some of biggest names and companies in the industries. EMU was an innovative, effective and replicable collaboration project between Estates and the School of Health (SOH) . The target was to maximise engagement in carbon management; promote collegiality and engender well-being and to prepare and move 150 staff and 3,000 students from an 'off campus' building to a new 'GREEN' building on City Campus. To succeed where many others have failed (including ourselves) we recognised a need for an engagement project within the old building which would provide the foundation for success in the new building. This represented a challenge, a large physical area to influence and encourage sustainable behaviour from staff entering programme review. However, the project resulted in achieving unprecedented savings of 33% in the metered areas.

Not only do we have one of the most challenging carbon reduction targets across the sector (50% by 2020) but we are constantly making progress in achieving this target and our latest renewals of the Display Energy Certificates has shown a further improvement in performance.

With our CHP engine now operational and a planned roll out of further improvements to the campus infrastructure we are confident that we will become the first University to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions.
Recycling Bin
Congratulations to all of those working on the area of waste minimisation. With the recycling, composting, food waste schemes we're continuing to see some very positive results.
This year (10/11) saw a rise in recycling rates to 69% (well above target) and a fall in the amount sent to landfill by a massive 32% to 156 Tonnes. These are brilliant results.
Improvements to the waste systems have seen a 22% increase in recycling since the first year of the full recycling system (07/08) and a 48% reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill from 298 Tonnes to 156 Tonnes.
At last night's Ecoversity Awards held at the Norcroft Centre, Estates and Facilities won the Gold Award in the Green Impact League.

We are bringing more of our activities onto the City Campus. From September 2011 the car parks on the City Campus will be running at the full permit allocation for the first time in a number of years. Overall City Campus Car Parking Spaces will be kept stable for 2011/12.
All existing permits will be valid until current expiry dates, but it will be more difficult to find a space in the car parks at peak times. Single occupancy car use to our sites has dropped by 1/3 since 2004 to 43% of staff and 14% of students meaning that pressure on car parks is lower than it used to be. We have a very wide range of options and incentives available for travelling to our sites in different ways:
