Applying for entry to the PhD programme

Please read this page carefully to ensure that your application is appropriate and can be handled quickly.

Make sure you have read the entry requirements for the PhD programme.

Application and selection procedure

Applications are considered as soon as they are presented, so it is advisable to apply as soon as possible. You may apply by the following methods:

Your fully completed application form should include a research proposal of between 1,500 and 2,000 words. This should be a justification for the research, and how it contributes to knowledge. You should refer to current relevant literature. You should also outline your proposed research method and provide evidence of having done some preliminary work.

We will not admit you to the PhD programme unless we can identify two supervisors familiar with, and interested in, your chosen area of research. If you are interested in more than one area, please provide as much detail about each as you can. If you have previous research experience, please supply copies of any resulting papers or reports.

In addition, we will ask you to supply the names of two referees.

It is essential to have a research area that really interests you. Whichever area(s) you propose initially, it is unlikely that your final topic will be identical to your first proposal. Part of our job is to help you to refine your ideas, to generate a good research project.

As you will appreciate, academic staff make a major commitment by accepting a PhD candidate, so please bear with us while we make careful consideration of your application and take up your references. We will contact you immediately when we can tell you the outcome of your application.
