Funding your PhD

A range of financial help is available to PhD students.

Economic and Social Research Council research studentships

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognises our doctoral programme for the award of research studentships. These cover fees and maintenance for full-time students, or help with fees for part-time students. UK and European Union students may apply for ESRC research studentships, although the latter group may apply only for help with fees.

Competition is keen. Most successful candidates hold a very good honours degree, but other factors are taken into account. They include the quality of your academic references, the nature of your research proposal and the quality of the research environment at the place you wish to study. School of Management students have a high success rate in winning ESRC research studentships. You are advised to work with your potential supervisors to put together an application. The deadline is 1 May.
