Will remain open on generator supply. Expect two short periods of disruption to electricity when switching between generator and mains supply. |
|
The School of Management and School of Health should be unaffected by the shutdown.
Electrical shutdown
The power will be cut to the full campus for an estimated eight hours on Saturday. However, for all the affected systems to be fully tested when the power comes back on, it is necessary that all buildings remain shut as above.
IT systems should be unaffected by the shutdown subject to work going to plan. However it is necessary for all electrical items, not on a backup supply, to be switched off and unplugged in all buildings at the end of the day on Friday.
Someone in every school, department or area should have been nominated to take responsibility for defrosting fridges and freezers that are not otherwise backed up or protected.
Please ensure that all equipment such as computers, printers, copiers and domestic fridges and freezers are turned off and unplugged before you leave the office on Friday 18 March.
Returning to work Monday 21 March
We do not anticipate the University IT systems being affected by the shutdown, but should the need arise, some systems may be shutdown. For this reason we ask that all staff are patient on returning to work on Monday morning as IT systems may be being restored.
Please check the ICT service status for the latest information and report any difficulties through to the ICT Service Desk on ext 3333.

From 8am on Saturday 19 February the electricity to the entire City Campus will be switched off for approximately eight hours. There will be no access to any buildings during this time as they will be locked for security and health and safety purposes.
An open meeting to plan for the shutdown will be held on Monday 7 February from 11am to 1pm in room D2. Please ensure that someone in every school, department and area has been nominated to take responsibility for leading the preparations for the shutdown and can attend the meeting if at all possible. They will need to arrange to defrost fridges and freezers that are not otherwise backed up or protected, and switch off equipments such as computers, printers, copiers and domestic fridges before leaving the office on Friday 18 February.
It is not yet known which IT systems (if any) will be affected by the shutdown however it should be anticipated that there may be some disruption to services during the afternoon of Friday 18 February and the morning of Monday 21 February to allow IT Services to shut down and restart the systems appropriately.
Details of preparations for the shutdown will be publicised via managers, through staff briefing and online. If you have any concerns or issues that you wish to raise regarding the electrical shutdown please email Keith Waddingham (k.waddingham@bradford.ac.uk)
Removal of Old Boiler
Work has been carried out on the boiler house in Richmond Building to remove the old boiler and to ensure that everything is in place for the new CHP engine to be fitted.
Thanks to our colleagues in the School of Informatics and Media you can watch a time lapse of the old boiler being removed
CHP Engine:
The Combined Heat and Power engine and generating set arrived on campus and was put into position over the 7 -10 October. It proved to be an eventful few days - the original delivery method was to reverse the low-loader up the Carlton Street and drag the unit off the back and slide it into position. However, on Thursday 7th October the rear axle on the low-loader snapped whilst attempting reversing into the Carlton Street entrance. On Friday a 200 tonne crane was brought to site and late on Friday afternoon, after country wide hunt for a second lifting bar, the CHP engine and generating set were eventually lifted off the low-loader and manoeuvred into position. Final adjustments were made on Sunday 10th October 2010 to get everything into place. The installation team worked round the clock for fours day in the pouring rain to make this happen. The University of Bradford would like to take this opportunity to thank all who were involved. [images]
Thermal Store
A number of people are asking about the large round tower that arrived on the corner of Richmond Building in the Carton Street car park on the 23rd November 2010. This big tower is the ‘thermal store’ for the CHP engine and has been installed to help maximise its efficiency. The tower will store excess heat, generated by the CHP engine, as hot water until a time when it is needed - pretty much how the old Economy 7 electricity used to work!
We originally thought that thermal store would be delivered to Bradford on the 25th October 2010. Unfortunately, this date was put back due to the fabrication process taking longer than anticipated.
Disruption to Heating
We are currently in the commissioning period for the CHP engine. During this time there may be times of unavoidable variations in heating levels and we apologise for any inconvenience during this time. For any questions please contact energy@bradford.ac.uk
The electrical shut down, as part of the Combined Heat and Power project, over the weekend of August 28 was completed successfully, slightly ahead of schedule, allowing us to continue with the implementation of the new electricity and hot water generator. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all staff who took the time to ensure that electrical items were switched off ahead of the weekend.
I'd also like to thank those staff directly involved in the project who worked hard to minimise the impact of the shutdown through detailed advanced planning. In particular thanks to the Estates electricians, our security staff and the School of Life Sciences response team. This innovative project will allow us to save money and reduce our impact on the environment by generating our own heat and electricity on campus. It will ensure we can save more than £8m over 20 years, help meet HEFCE's carbon reduction targets and maintain our position as a beacon in sustainability within the Higher Education sector.
The new plant will be up and running by November 2010.
Professor Geoff Layer' Deputy Vice-Chancellor
UPDATE :19/08/2010
Bank Holiday Weekend: Saturday 28 - Monday 30 August 2010
The electrical shutdown planned as part of the Combined Heat and Power project will be taking place on Saturday 28 August.
The following buildings will NOT be affected and will all be open over the bank holiday weekend (subject to usual opening hours):
All other City Campus buildings will be locked for security and health & safety purposes during the three days of works. This will include the JB Priestley library which will close at 9pm on Friday and remain closed until 8:45am on Tuesday, 31 August.
The power will only be cut to the Richmond Building including the Workshop Block for an estimated eight hours on Saturday. However, for all the affected systems to be fully tested when the power comes back on, it is necessary that all buildings remain shut for the full Bank Holiday weekend.
Electrical Equipment
IT systems should be unaffected by the shutdown subject to work going to plan. Although it is necessary for all electrical items, not on a backup supply, to be switched off in the Richmond building, Workshop Block, AND as far as possible in other buildings at the end of the day on Friday 27 August 2010.
We therefore request that before close of business on Friday 27 August, you switch off all equipment such as computers, printers, copiers and arrange for fridges and freezers to be deliberately defrosted in advance of the shutdown to avoid damaged carpets and leakage through ceilings. Please do NOT rely on the power outage to defrost your freezer compartments for you. This does not include any refrigiration equipment being used for experimentation. Please contact Keith Waddingham if you have any concerns.
As mentioned, we do not anticipate the University IT systems being affected by the shutdown, but please be patient on the morning Tuesday 31 August and report any difficulties through to the ICT Service Desk on ext 3333.
Access to Carlton Street Car Park
Whilst the works are being carried out to our Substation there will be some traffic disruption to and from the Carlton Street Car Park. We therefore recommend that you avoid parking in this area from Wednesday 25 August to Wednesday 1 September. It is anticipated that delivery access will be unaffected and every effort will be made to minimise disruption.
Contact Details
Widespread consultation has taken place across the University to ensure that all Schools and Departments are aware of the shutdown and that the necessary arrangements have been put in place. Should you have any concerns or issues that you wish to raise, however, please contact Keith Waddingham on K.Waddingham@bradford.ac.uk or tel: 01274 23 3132. For any enquires over the Bank Holiday weekend please contact Security on 01274 23 6999.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these essential works and thank you in advance for your co-operation.
UPDATE: 23/08/2010
Thermal store:
The CHP unit requires a large ‘thermal store’ which is a large round metal tank which will store hot water. It will be located at the end of the Richmond Building Carlton Wing and will be painted grey. As you can see from the plans the Thermal Store will be four storeys tall. To see the detailed plans please click here.
Heating Our Buildings:
The University usually switches the heating on at the beginning of term in mid September. However, due to the scale and complex nature of the works this may be later this year and as systems are commissioned there will be short periods of inconsistent heating afterwards.
Progress Made:
Work was completed on 16 August to remove asbestos from Chesham building and the Richmond Plant Room. This project (totalling over £200,000) has removed and cleaned a significant amount of asbestos, which will enable future works to be undertaken at lower costs.
The modifications to the University heating systems were also completed on 16 August. Work is now being carried out to test and commission of the system.
The main CHP contractor will start on site on 31 August. The external works to the Carlton Street car park will cause some minor disruption from Wednesday 25 August to Wednesday 1 September whilst a new entrance to the boiler house is being created. This work will enable the CHP unit to be located internally.
Key dates:
28 August – High Voltage Switch Over
31 August – Main CHP contractor works start
19 September – Enabling works contract ends and the heating system should be operating
5 October – CHP engine delivered to site
25 October – Thermal store delivered to site
