The University of Bradford will be awarding honorary degrees during ceremonies
on Wednesday 19, Thursday 20 and Friday 21 July 2006 to the following
people:
- Sir Digby Jones; former Director-General of the CBI
- Rt Rev David Konstant; former Bishop of Leeds
- John Player; Headteacher of Grange Technology College in Bradford
- Angela Baker; founding member of the ‘Calendar Girls’
- His Excellency Ahmad Tejan Kabbah; President of Sierra Leone
- John Hume; Nobel Prize winner and Northern Ireland politician
- Dr Chris Gaffney; archaeologist and member of Channel 4’s Time
Team
- John Gater; archaeologist and member of Channel 4’s Time Team
- Barry Sheerman; MP for Huddersfield and Chair of the Parliamentary
Education and Skills Select Committee
Honorary graduates will receive their awards during degree ceremonies
which will take place in the University's Great Hall, in the Richmond
Building on the main campus of the University.
Professor Chris Taylor, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford,
said: "We extend our warmest welcome to the Honorary Graduates.
"It is with great pride that we have been given this opportunity to honour
such an array of distinguished colleagues. Their achievements are an impressive
testament to their talents, and they reflect and embody the interests
and objectives of the University of Bradford."

Wednesday 19 July
Sir
Digby Jones
Sir Digby will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws for his contributions
to the world of business and, in particular, from 2000 to 2006, as Director-General
of the CBI.
He will receive his honorary degree during a ceremony which starts
at 10.15am and will be available for interviews and photographs between
11.15am and 11.45am.
Rt
Rev David Konstant
David Konstant will receive an honorary Doctor of the University in
recognition of his wide ranging contributions as Bishop of Leeds (1985-2004),
in particular for his work in education and the area of interfaith relations
in the City of Bradford.
Bishop David will receive his honorary degree during a ceremony which
starts at 1.45pm and will be available for interviews and photographs
between 11am and 11.30am.
John
Player OBE
John will receive an honorary Doctor of Education in recognition of
his contributions to the education of young people in Bradford. In particular,
for his outstanding work as Headteacher of Grange Technology College,
which during this time, has become one of the highest achieving schools
in the country.
John will receive his honorary degree during a ceremony which starts
at 4.30pm and will be available for interviews and photographs between
1.30pm and 2pm.
Thursday 20 July
Angela
Baker
Angela will receive an honorary Doctor of the University for her outstanding
charity work, particularly taking into account her contributions as
the founder of the 'Calendar Girls'.
Angela will receive her honorary degree in a ceremony which starts
at 10.30am and will be available for interviews and photographs between
9.15am and 9.45am.
His
Excellency Ahmad Tejan Kabbah
The President of Sierra Leone will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws
for his contributions in improving the humanitarian conditions of the
people of his country through the promotion of peace, good governance
and national reconciliation.
In particular, he will be recognised for his work as President of Sierra
Leone (1996 to present) in restoring peace to the country after a decade
of civil war and for his efforts in working towards political and economic
reconstruction following the end of the war.
This nomination takes into account the strong links which exist between
the University's Department of Peace Studies and the University of Sierra
Leone, and also the historic links between the City of Bradford and
the town of Bradford in Southern Sierra Leone.
Mr Kabbah will receive his honorary degree in a ceremony which starts
at 2.15pm and will be available for interviews and photographs between
11.15am and 11.45am.
John
Hume
John will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters for his decisive contributions
to the Northern Ireland peace process, culminating in the historic 1998
Good Friday Agreement.
John will receive his honorary degree in a ceremony which starts at
2.15pm and will be available for interviews and photographs between
3.30pm and 4pm.
Friday 21 July
Dr Chris Gaffney and John Gater
Chris and John, who are alumni of the University of Bradford, will
both receive an honorary Doctor of Science for their distinguished contributions
to the field of Archaeological Geophysics, particularly through their
Bradford-based company GSB Prospection.
In addition, they will be recognised for their long-standing contributions
to the Channel 4 television series Time Team, which has successfully
brought archaeology and science together to a wider audience.
Chris and John will receive their honorary degrees in a ceremony which
starts at 10.30am and will be available for interviews and photographs
between 11.30am and 12noon.

Barry
Sheerman MP
Barry will receive an honorary Doctor of Education for his contributions
as a Member of Parliament from 1983 onwards and, in particular, in recognition
of his work as Chair of the Parliamentary Education and Skills Select
Committee.
Barry will receive his honorary degree in a ceremony which starts at
2.15pm and will be available for interviews and photographs between
11am and 11.30am.
