New Programme to Raise Level
of English
The first intake of
international students taking part in a new programme to help them achieve
the necessary level of English needed to undertake a degree will be welcomed
to the University this month.
The International
Foundation Programme (IFP), based in the University's Language Unit, will
aid recruitment at the University by raising the level of academic English
of postgraduate and undergraduate students to satisfy School and Departmental
entrance requirements.
Director of the Language
Unit Graham Harding said: "The ideal participant is any student who, on
the basis of subject knowledge and achievements, would be accepted on
a degree course but whose English is currently at an unacceptable level.
"The student may
therefore be made a conditional offer for a degree course with entry one
academic year later, with the condition that an appropriate level of English
is attained before entry."
At the end of the
programme the confirmation of the level of English will be by recommendation
of the Language Unit, via formal internal assessment. The programme will
be made up of nine single modules, covering the essential academic English
skills, and a triple module comprising a focused independent study/project.
The independent study
will be assessed for English and related skills, with collaboration and
input by receiving departments.
