Students invited to Summer
School - FE2HE
This
year's FE2HE summer school scheme has been hailed a great success with
students coming from all over the region to live in the University's Halls
of Residence for a week, finding out what they can do to save the planet
and sampling a variety of academic, social and sporting activities.
The scheme is aimed
at students in Year 12 at Further Education and sixth form colleges in
the UK. The programme gave students the opportunity to get involved with
a whole programme of events and activities such as designing and building
swimming robots, developing their creative and critical thinking skills
and attending lectures and seminars in a choice of subjects.
The students were
also able to meet existing University students to find out what student
life is really like, get useful advice on applying to university and picking
up some handy tips on studying and student finances.
The funding was provided
by the Government's Department for Education and Skills, and the educational
charity Sutton Trust, which encourages and supports non-privileged pupils
to go to university.
Mr Peter Lampl, Chairman
of the Sutton Trust, said: "Research we carried out into summer schools
shows that students attending colleges of Further Education were less
likely to apply for summer school places than school students. We have
therefore worked with the Government and FE Colleges to run summer schools
which have been especially designed for FE students, to offer them a wide
range of opportunities."
Priority was given
to students who would be the first in their family to go to Higher Education,
from families with relatively low incomes or those who lived in an area
or attended a college from which a low proportion of students go on to
Higher Education.
