New Appointment for Neighbourhood
Renewal Unit
Student
Carol Dickinson has been appointed to the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit (NRU)
Community Forum as a Government Advisor.
The NRU is one of
the Government's principal agencies designed to revive Britain's most
deprived communities. Its major focus is on community empowerment and
part of the Forum's job is to evaluate and advise on the NRU's performance
and success.
A total of 500 applications
were received to sit on the Forum but only 20 have been successful. It
is comprised of regeneration professionals and active citizens. Carol,
who is currently studying for a diploma in community regeneration and
development and is a resident director of Royds Community Association,
believes learning is a key aspect of the community regeneration process
and necessary for a person's personal and professional development.
Carol said: "My experience
as a regeneration scheme volunteer gave me the necessary skills to qualify
for the course. I was a confident person before but had no confidence
in my ability to learn. Now, almost two years later, I'm using knowledge
I've gained at the University to help me improve my employment chances
and I'm now on the Community Forum working with the Neighbourhood Renewal
Unit to inform Central Government of how policy affects development."
