Aspects of Writing
'Aspects of writing
local history: a Dalesman on the Dales' was a talk presented by Dr W.R.
Bill Mitchell, at the J. B. Priestley Library.
Bill Mitchell is a
former editor of The Dalesman and Cumbria magazines and has written
extensively on local history, producing over 100 books about Yorkshire
and the Lake District. His particular interests include social life and
customs, railways and natural history. Among his recent publications are
Harrogate, How they Lived in the Yorkshire Dales and a biography
of the Kearton brothers, pioneering naturalists from Swaledale.
This event celebrated
Bill's recent donation to the J. B. Priestley Library of an archive of
Dalesman material, plus Dalesman publications and other rare books on
Yorkshire history. Items from this fascinating collection were put on
display at the Library.
Bill's talk was preceded
by an introduction, Local History Writing in Yorkshire, by Paul Jennings,
of Local & Regional Studies, in the School of Lifelong Education and Development.
