Bradford and its Surrounding Areas

Town Hall

Discover one of the UK's hidden gems - Bradford.  Once considered to be the wool capital of the world, Bradford's impressive history is reflected in the many striking buildings found throughout the city. Take a stroll through Little Germany and step back in time to Victorian Bradford, a time when German wool merchants built imposing buildings to store their goods. Nearby is Bradford Cathedral, a magnificent building full of interesting features including a window designed by William Morris.

Contemporary culture can be also be found in the city's cultural attractions including the National Media Museum, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery and Impressions Gallery; a venue dedicated to photography. The nearby village of Saltaire, (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is also home to the 1853 Gallery which houses one of the largest collections of the artist David Hockney's work.

While you're here enjoy one of the city's many cultural events.  Highlights include the three film festivals at the National Media Museum, the Saltaire Festival and the Bradford Mela.

Bradford is now also the world's first UNESCO designated City of Film

The Bradford Mela is just one of the events which celebrates Bradford's Asian culture. The influence of the city's multi-cultural population can be found in many places and no more so than in the city's Asian restaurants, which have earned Bradford a reputation for some of the best Asian restaurants in the country. Also not to be missed are the many shops selling food and a wonderful array of colourful textiles.

Venture further to the surrounding towns and villages and discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site Saltaire, the former spa town of Ilkley and the village of Haworth. Haworth holds a special place in history as the home of the Brontës, one of Britain's most famous literary families. Their former home the Brontë Parsonage Museum is full of their possessions as well as an interesting exhibition about their lives.
