Facilities

Originally a nineteenth century mill, the four floor Phoenix South West Building has been transformed into DHEZ Academic.

It is a creative space packed with technology, designed to support health professionals, students, businesses and academics to work together, share knowledge and ideas, and conduct research.

It houses three of the University's well-established public clinics:

  • physiotherapy
  • eye examinations
  • patient medicine

Other facilities include the UK's first Technology Smart House and a large interactive public exhibition space.

The building also houses:

Technology Smart House

Our Technology Smart House facility offers digital health capabilities that are unique in the UK.

It is a two bedroom house built within the Phoenix Building containing advanced sensor technology designed to monitor and capture data on movement and daily living activities. It's a perfect place to test digital health prototypes in a 'real life' environment, and deliver a more engaging learning experience for students..

The Technology Smart House will showcase technological advancement in digital health through externally funded activities and projects, as well as prototypes developed by our undergraduate and postgraduate students. It will utilise state-of-the-art technologies including:

  • embedded electronics
  • mobile, wireless and satellite communications
  • biosensors and biomaterials
  • big data analytics

Students working with academics can observe or conduct research investigations in the House and these can be relayed directly into the 50-seat lecture theatre to be observed by researchers and learners.

Pathology Laboratory

The Pathology Laboratory supports the delivery of one of DHEZ (Academic) themes: Digital Diagnostics.

It provides space to support the development of our existing Digital Diagnostics Group and will also be developed to provide point-of-care (near patient testing) specialist training, research and development resource.

This facility brings together primary and secondary care healthcare providers, academics and SMEs with an interest in holistic understanding of patients’ diagnostic pathway.  It also enhances the student experience, providing our students with a practical insight into how a research finding can be developed into a robust diagnostic test. Students gain experience of established and emerging point-of care tests - an important facet of delivering diagnostic services nearer to the patient.

The laboratory space also supports SME-Academic engagement to develop innovative diagnostic tests/devices.

Phlebotomy Suite

The DHEZ (Academic) Phlebotomy Suite supports University of Bradford students and academics, as well as providing high quality blood testing services to the local community.

An accredited Phlebotomy course

Our students have the opportunity to become fully qualified Phlebotomists whilst studying at the University of Bradford. Local Trusts indicate that there is a requirement for trained phlebotomists in the NHS, where waiting times for phlebotomy training for nurses and midwives are over 6 months.

The courses are available to the Bradford clinical community, providing phlebotomy training for healthcare providers in local hospitals, GP surgeries, health centres and private companies. They are also open to local people wishing to re-train as phlebotomists, providing the knowledge and hands-on experience required by employers.

Research support

The Phlebotomy Suite provides research support to our academic community, including consented blood samples for research projects. This activity is supported by existing Ethical Tissue resources based in the Faculty of Life Sciences, and provides access to material which can further support the development of clinical/applied research in Bradford.

Exhibition Space

At the core of the Phoenix Building is a large public exhibition space. Research and educational exhibitions and events on topics related to long-term health conditions are run here throughout the year, and are open to the general public.

DHEZ Academic uses these exhibitions to inform itself and others of the latest advancements in digital healthcare from around the world.
