Welcome to the University of Bradford. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring that students receive their adjustments in line with the recommendations made in the student's assessment of their educational support needs and in line with the legal requirements of the DDA. As such you will need to be aware of some of the conventions and policies of the University.
In order to help you to undertake your work effectively whilst on campus here is a list of things you may need to know or may come across. The University website is a good source of detailed information.
The service is located on Level 0 of Student Central, in the Learning Mall.
Student Central is joined to the J B Priestley Library at the South East corner of the main campus.
Your main point of contact for any work issues will be Clear Links Ltd. If you need to access the Disability Service or the student's Disability Advisor for information please refer to the Contacts page.
The University expects Clear Links workers to adhere to the policies and principles of good practice that apply to all members of staff, students and members of the public on campus. There are policies on key areas of equality (pdf), which aim to protect you and others you work with which can be viewed as one booklet.
We strongly advise you to read these documents to familiarise yourself with the guiding principles that govern the University of Bradford's ethos and practice.
Staff around the University have been briefed about your presence on campus. This is intended to enhance your experience here and to help you to feel welcome.
For working guidelines please refer to the Clear Links Code of Practice. If you are experiencing any problems please contact Clear Links (email info@clear-links.co.uk) in the first instance who will then contact the Disability Service if necessary.
You may be asked to type up notes into an alternative format for students. You may also need to have email communication with a student or Clear Links. You should where possible use your own PC for this in line with the Clear Links Support Ltd Code of Practice.
To help you undertake your work effectively the University offers you the opportunity to register as a non-paid associate which allows you to have a username and password to access PCs in the cluster areas. The procedure for this is as follows:
The username and password will be sent to the Disability Service within a day or two and this will be sent to you by the Disability Service.
There are policies governing correct usage of the University IT facilities and you are requested to read this.
Your library card will allow you access when supporting students in the library. Students will have their own card.
The student consents to you using their card on their behalf. Consent from the student will be required in writing or via the Disability Service.
To borrow books for a student you must take your card and the student's card to the library. Both your library record and the student's library record are updated with a message which says that you may borrow books on that student's behalf. You can then issue the books on the self-issue machines using the student's card. You cannot take out the books on your own card because you do not have a borrowing allocation, and it would make you responsible for the books, whether lost or returned late - this responsibility is with the student.
As part of your role you may need access to resources such as pens, writing pads, highlighters and so forth. Students with DSA General Allowance provision should be providing the support worker with these resources and claiming the cost back from the DSA. (Clear Links will inform students of this). When Clear Links give you your assignment with the student you will need to discuss with the student the resources that you require.
In case of emergency requirements the Disability Service will provide these resources to the support worker and the Disability Service will invoice the student / SFE.
Resources for students without DSA will be provided by the Disability Service.
The Security and Emergency Services Office is located in the Atrium of the Richmond Building. It is staffed at all times and staff are available to help you with any problems.
