Having qualified in interpreting and translation French & Spanish Joint Honours, I then completed a PGCE in modern languages. Over time I taught across Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 in community schools and was part of the school's senior management team before I left to work as self-empolyed to give me time to complete further qualifications and recover from my eating disorder. I undertook further training in supporting people with dyslexia and, in particular, dyspraxia whilst working in schools.
Over the last 15 years I've been extensively involved in ESOL and EFL teaching and learning (a major component of my first degree) and worked for Education First English Language Experience, managing their summer schools. I have held both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching posts, ranging from the UoB's English Language for International Communication degree to delivering the teacher-training PGCE programme in primary MFL education. I was also involved in the national qualification for Probation Officers and related staff, delivering core skills modules which focused on, amongst other elements, reflective practice and professional development.
I've provided specialist training in emotional intelligence to secondary school staff, consultancy to Kirklees Education Authority and was a consultant on a significant Teacher Development Agency project. I have also provided primary-years MFL training at Trinity and All Saints College and contributed to the work of the former UoB research centre, CCCMH.
I began gaining my counselling qualifications in 2004, and having already worked in private practice my plans continue as I intend to extend my qualifications to full master's level whilst working towards accreditation as soon as my PhD is completed. my main interest is in transactional analysis but my counselling work is primarily person-centred integrative.
Currently, I am a trustee (former Chair of Trustees) of the UK national charity Men Get Eating Disorders Too, registered charity number 1139351.
