Professor Raed Abd-Alhameed

BIOGRAPHY +

Raed A Abd-Alhameed is Professor of Electromagnetic and Radio Frequency Engineering at the University of Bradford, UK. He received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Basrah University, in 1982 and 1985 respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Bradford, UK, in 1997, all in electrical engineering. He has long years' research experience over 25 years in the areas of Radio Frequency, antennas and electromagnetic computational techniques, and has published over 500 academic journal and conference papers; in addition he is co-authors of three books and several book chapters. He is the senior academic responsible for electromagnetics research in the communications research group, in which a new antenna design configurations and computational techniques have been developed including several patents were considered and filed. Jointly with Prof. Excell (now he is the Dean of Engineering School in Wrexham University), he has developed the principle of the 'hybrid' method for electromagnetic field computation, which is able to combine the most appropriate method for differing regions of a problem (e.g. the human head and a mobile telephone). This method is recognised as being a leading area of research in Bioelectromagnetic field computation. He also investigates the reduction of the size of antennas for personal mobile communications. The development of this kind of antenna is under active investigation (three patent applications submitted). He has also developed the mathematical tools needed for the simulation of non-linear circuits, including energy-storing devices. Moreover, He has written three different programs for electromagnetic scattering problems (Wire Antenna design; Dielectrically-loaded antennas and Microstrip Wire antennas) and one code for analysis of nonlinear circuits using Volterra series. Interest has been shown by publishing houses in finding ways of disseminating this work.

In addition, the expertise developed in this research area, in particular the highly realistic analysis of antenna design process in the presence of large multi-layer scatterers, using the Bradford-developed hybrid modelling techniques (MoM, FEM, FDTD, FDFD and subgridding FDTD methods), can significantly benefit the proposed research projects. At the present he is the leader of the Antennas, Propagation and Computational Electromagnetics research group and head of Radio Frequency and Electromagnetics Research in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering and Informatics, Bradford University, UK. He is Principal Investigator for the EPSRC-funded project 'Multi-Band Balanced Antennas with Enhanced Stability and Performance for Mobile Handsets'. He has also been a named co-investigator in several funded research projects including: 1) Nonlinear and demodulation mechanisms in biological tissue (Dept. of Health, Mobile Telecommunications & Health Research Programme and 2) Assessment of the Potential Direct Effects of Cellular Phones on the Nervous System (EU FP5: collaboration with 6 other major research organisations across Europe). He is the leader for several successful knowledge Transfer Programmes such as with Pace plc, YW plc and ITEG ltd. He has awarded Certificate of Excellence with grade "Outstanding" on June 2014, for the knowledge Transfer Partnerships with 7technologies Company for the period April 2012-March 2014, Certificate No. KTP008734; he was also awarded the business Innovation Award for his successful KTP with Pace plc on the design and implementation of MIMO antenna systems. He is the chair of several successful workshops on Energy Efficient and Reconfigurable Transceivers (EERT): Approach towards Energy Conservation and CO2 Reduction that addresses the biggest challenges for the future wireless systems. He is also invited as keynote speaker for several International conferences such as, ICST, ITA and EPC; in addition to chair many research sessions. He is also appointed as guest editor for the IET Science, Measurements and Technology Journal since 2009. He is also a research visitor for Wrexham University, Wales since Sept 2009 covering the wireless and communications research areas. His current research interests include hybrid electromagnetic computational techniques, EMC, antenna design, low SAR antennas for mobile handset, bioelectromagnetics, RF mixers, active antennas, beam steering antennas, MIMO antennas, Energy efficient Power Amplifiers, RF predistorter design including biological cell modelling for breast cancer applications. He is the Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of Higher Education Academy and a Chartered Engineer.

GRANTS +

Future plans

- Create, maintain and promote a portfolio of high research-quality deliverables and work closely with the academic members of staff towards high impact international research outputs – for inclusion in the submission of REF2020.
- My research experience on Radio frequency identification (RFID), Multiple-input multiple-output communications (MIMO), Ultra-Wideband (UWB) including the front end design requirement of the 5G spectrum and beyond, represent some of the strongest emerging research areas in the world at present, and thus H2020 grant application joined with several EUs Universities and industries has already submitted in Jan 2016 that supports the research vision of 5G.
- The emerging of health and Engineering technologies is pursuing new visions that could attract industry, public organisations and research students (both National and International). I have already extended my footprint into this and new EPSRC grant application expected to be submitted in April 2016.

Current, and significant recent, funded projects

- Awarded an Innovate UK grant for two years starting Feb 2017 shared with Dr JM Noras and Dr SMR Jones. The project (with Arris Global Ltd) will expand the capability of specialist communication systems by optimizing the RF signal path, exploiting diversity and introducing novel RF and antenna designs supported by optimised software algorithms. The project at the University is led by Project team Professor Raed Abd-Alhameed, Dr James M Noras, and Dr Stephen MR Jones.
- Awarded research proposal funded under the European Commission Research and Innovation call (start date Jan 2017 for four years): H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016 (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks); Brief Abstract of the Project: SECRET is a collaborative European Training Network (ETN) committed to create an `excellent’ educational training platform; that is multi-disciplinary and intersectoral in nature, for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in the field of wireless communications and networking. The Bradford participants are based in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with the total of 8 European consortium partners. The project at the University is led by project team Professor Raed Abd-Alhameed, Dr James M Noras, Dr Stephen MR Jones and Professor Rami SR Qahwaji.
- Harvard Engineering ltd (April 2015- Dec 2015), Project: Design and test a monopole antenna to cover UHF and GSM frequency spectrum bands on circular board integrated with Harvard Transceiver. The new product has currently developed to meet the ITU wireless communications regulations.
- Yorkshire Innovation Fund, Research Development Project (RDP) with TWO World Consulting Limited (April 2014 – April 2015); this project produces new cell phone protective case, provisionally branded The Tiger Case. Crucially, this new product will be the only phone case that will protect the cell phone user from over 95% of the radiation emitted by their cell phone. The research deeply investigates the transmitter technologies embedded in modern cell phones so as to facilitate product design incorporating improved handset transmission efficiency therefore lengthening battery life and improving safety and usability; The Bradford team with Two World Consulting working together to file a new patent.
- Yorkshire Innovation Fund, Research Development Project (RDP) with Emkay engineering Ltd (Jan 2015 – June 2015), This project developed a wireless control of air bubble tube for the special needs sector. The new product provides enhancement to the electrical components through wireless connectivity that can support the multi-sensory intentions and significantly improve the functionality and value in a specialist manner;
- TSB-KTP, 2012-2014, Proposal title: Expand the capability of specialist communication systems by optimizing the RF signal path, exploiting diversity and introducing novel antenna designs supported by optimised software algorithms; Project jointly with Dr SMR Jones and Dr JM Noras for Datong PLC.
- Yorkshire Innovation Fund, Small Innovation Project (SIP) with Emkay Industry Ltd (June 2013-Dec 2013), The project is to develop and implement new software algorithms that have significant improvements related to the current technologies applied by the company; and the ability to keep reliable wireless control performance and to cover remotely multi-functions.
- WiMAC Ltd (Sept 2012- Dec 2013), Project: UHF and Mobile Antennas Design and Validation, joined with CH See and Dr NJ McEwan; Overview: WiMAC supply instruments with in wireless modems and external antennas for street lighting control and management applications. The University of Bradford undertakes an R&D programme to evaluate potential antenna types, modelling of identified antennas and produce an optimised production prototype. The new product has already installed in USA and several EU countries.
- TSB-KTP, 2008-2011, Proposal title: MIMO antenna design for Indoor and outdoor environments; Project jointly with Dr SMR Jones for Pace PLC.
- Hawkeye Industrial IETG (July 2010 – Feb 2011), Project: was to develop two antenna design models to work inside manhole and make the possible communication to GSM 900 and 1800 frequency spectrum bands. The antenna worked under sever environment and provide the required communication link with the mobile base stations and satisfied the ITU radiation regulations.
- EPSRC, grant 2006-08, Proposal title: “Multi-band and bandwidth enhancement of using Balanced antennas for Mobile handsets”; Project jointly with Prof Excell.
- Nonlinear and demodulation mechanisms in biological tissue (Dept. of Health, Mobile Telecommunications & Health Research Programme); Project jointly with Prof Excell.
