MA Mental Health Practice

The MA Mental Health Practice has been specifically designed to ensure social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists meet the five key competency areas to gain the Approved Mental Health Practitioners (AMHP) professional status, as defined by the General Social Care Council (GSCC).  The GSSC requires that all practitioners are trained to M level in the five key competency areas.

Students who successfully complete 3 modules in the programme will gain a Postgraduate Certificate.  Once completing five modules, the portfolio and a placement the student can choose to study a further 20 credits to gain a Postgraduate Diploma and achieve the Higher Specialist Award, given by the GSCC.  Upon completion of a dissertation students can achieve the MA in Mental Health Practice and the GSCC Advanced Award.

Employers are involved in the development, design, delivery and assessment of the course.  They deliver practice workshops, review the portfolio and placement activity, and are members of the Programme Board.  Practitioners are also involved in teaching and assessment of the portfolio. There is also a commitment to include Service Users and Carers in the teaching of each module for the students to learn about the impact of their work.
