Disabled
Students
The University of Bradford
positively welcomes applications from disabled students. All applications
will be considered by departments purely on the basis of academic criteria.
If you indicate a disability
on your UCAS form, you will be invited to contact the Disability
Office to discuss your particular requirements, and will receive information
about our facilities, and on the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA). DSA
is available to undergraduate or postgraduate disabled students and to
part-time undergraduate disabled students who are studying no more than
60 credits a year.
Physical access around the
campus is improving. Several buildings have ramps, electronic doors and
chair lifts; while infra-red loops and other equipment is in place in
some lecture theatres.
The Disability
Office has set up a computer training room for disabled students with
IT equipment that includes voice recognition systems. There is an increasing
range of assistive technology available on loan, such as portable induction
loops for students who wear hearing aids, and tape recorders for you to
tape lectures. The Disability
Office works with the Library and the
Computer Centre with regard to access
to information, and liaises closely with academic
departments to meet the support needs of disabled students.
The University operates special
assessment procedures for disabled students, including eligibility for
Disabled Students' Allowance. This makes it possible, for instance, for
approval to be sought for the allowance of extra time in examinations
or note taking support in lectures.
For details, or to arrange
a visit to the campus, please contact the Disability Office, or visit
our website at www.bradford.ac.uk/disability
Useful publications include
'Higher Education and Disability: a guide to higher education for people
with disabilities', available from SKILL: National Bureau for Students
with Disabilities, 336 Brixton Road, London SW9 7AA.
The University has a team of
experienced staff who are always very willing to meet with disabled students
interested in coming to the University. If you would like a copy of the
University's Disability Statement, please contact the Disability Office.
If you would like information sending in another format, please indicate
your preference (large print, Braille, ASCII or tape).

"I applied
to several universities in the north, and visited all of them. Bradford
was the most convenient, the most welcoming, the most helpful regarding
my disability; and possibly the best course as well.
"Before
applying to University, I contacted the Disability
Office. They arranged to meet me at the School
of Management and we went through all the support I might need. I
knew I would find it difficult to use the School of Management's Computer
Centre, so they provided me with a computer to use at home, and I have
been offered a laptop so I can type notes in lectures, and download them
later. I also have volunteer helpers to get me in and out of lectures,
and mobile phones so I can tell them about cancelled lectures or changed
arrangements. And I have extra time for assignments and examinations.
They also offered things that I have tried so far to do without, such
as taxis to lectures (my family can usually bring me) and an amanuensis
to take notes for me. Everything that was offered has been delivered."
