Monthly Update - January 2011

The bad weather in December unfortunately had an effect upon the progress of the build.

With weather records tumbling, it is a credit to the main contractors ISG that progress to the works during January, meant that some headway has been made to make up the time lost. The concrete frame was completed on time, ahead of the Topping Out Ceremony on 28th January. Local TV presenter and Honorary Graduate Harry Gration was in attendance with the Dean of the School, Shirley Congdon and Deputy Vice Chancellor Sue Kershaw to complete the final concrete pour to the top of the building.

Inside, the refurbishment of the existing building has progressed well. All the highly insulating windows have been installed, allowing all areas to be plastered and have their first coat of paint. The heating system installation has commenced, with radiators fitted to Level 3 and meter after meter of pipe work now running throughout the building. The electrical works continue at a fast rate with power data points now in place on Levels 2 & 3.

The link across to the radiography bunker has now been completed together with the steel staircase linking Levels 0 & 1. The roofing works began last week and should be completed within another week, ready for the installation of the roof light above the PACS Suite.

The Level 4 extension is beginning to take shape, with the full silhouette of the building now visible. The main entrance on Level 01 has been most affected by the weather, but this space is beginning to take shape, and the concrete walls and roof should be completed mid February.

There are still places left for staff and students on tours of the building during the construction stage, to experience the part of the build that most people never see.
