Student Profile

Sally Killen, BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult Branch)

Sally spent four years working in the Navy as a medic, and on leaving the forces decided that she wanted to continue her career in healthcare. She initially investigated both nursing and paramedic training.

"Eventually I decided on nursing," comments Sally. "I chose to come to the University of Bradford, as it's near to where I live. Initially, I enrolled on an Advanced Diploma course in Learning Disability nursing (no longer available at Bradford), as I'd had some voluntary experience of working with young people with learning disabilities."

However, Sally missed the more practical clinical experience that she had enjoyed during her time in the Navy, so decided to transfer to the Adult nursing course at the end of her first year.

"I've particularly enjoyed the placements on the course, which you attend for 50% of your time here. I've learnt so much through the on the job training that this course offers. My first placement was at a community hospital, which was an excellent introduction to the clinical environment."

Sally has opted to transfer onto the BSc (Hons) Nursing degree, taking an enhanced year  three route after two years of study on the Advanced Diploma programme.

"Being a nursing student at Bradford has been a great experience. Everyone is really friendly and supportive and there are lots of social activities to get involved in too."

Once she finishes her studies, Sally hopes to work as nurse in the Bradford area. "I'd really like to work in Accident and Emergency", she says.
