Student Profile

Katie Chislett

Advanced Diploma in Nursing (Mental Health)

Katie completed a BSc (Hons) in Sociology at the University of Huddersfield before deciding to study mental health nursing at Bradford.

"After I finished my first degree, I started working in retail management following on from a part time job which I did whilst I was studying. After a year I decided that this wasn't the route for me and started to explore a number of alternative careers," Katie said.

"My mum's a nurse, so she persuaded me to look at nursing as a career. I really enjoy working with people, talking through their problems and handling challenging behaviour, so I decided that mental health nursing was the right route for me."

Katie applied for the Advanced Diploma in Nursing (Mental Health) through clearing and is now in the second year of her course. She has really enjoyed the mix of theory and practice that she has experienced during her time at Bradford and feels that this real life work experience will equip her to find a job on graduating.

So far, Katie has been on two placements, one working with people who have been involved in the criminal justice system, through a large mental health service provider and one with a smaller team in the community.

"Both of these have been great experiences. I've really learnt a lot and have enjoyed sharing what I've learnt with my fellow students. Everyone on the course is so friendly and we work really well together, supporting each other through our studies. The lectures are really inspiring and give everyone the chance to participate in discussions."

Katie has also found the experience that staff can bring to the course to be invaluable.

"All of the lecturers have worked in the field and can bring different viewpoints and experiences into the classroom. They are so approachable and encourage you to meet with them to discuss any aspect of your work."

Once she finishes her course, Katie hopes to work as a mental health nurse in the prison service.
