Clinical placements form an important part of your nursing degree course from the first year. 50% of your credits will be from theory work and 50% from practice, with placement periods interspersed with classroom study.
Placements are provided with local trusts and healthcare providers across the Bradford and Airedale region and will include a variety of shift patterns, early and late shifts, including some weekends. You are required to work a minimum of three weeks night duty over a three-year course. Depending on your branch of study, you may also be allocated community placements in Bradford and the surrounding area. The Bradford and Airedale areas serve a multicultural/multi ethnic population with a wide range of health and social needs and provide the unique opportunity of experiencing care in urban, semi-rural and rural areas.
We offer nursing placements within the following trusts:
Airedale Hospital is an award-winning district general hospital that provides acute and specialist care for local people who live in an area extending from the industrial Pennines on the fringes of Bradford in the South, to the upland hills and valleys of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in the North.
The Trust has three service delivery groups:
Urgent response
Hospital then home
Elective care
These groups incorporate services for gynaecology, orthopaedic, urology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, cardiology, diabetes, stroke unit, dermatology, radiology, outpatients, physical rehabilitation unit, accident and emergency, acute admissions unit, children's unit, labour ward and maternity care, neonatal unit, day nursery, ICU, CCU and HDU and pharmacy.
Practice-led, clinically focused placements are available in all specialist areas throughout the Trust. Placements give you an opportunity to follow the patient journey through the healthcare system, and to be involved in the giving of quality care. Clinical education at Airedale is delivered at the patient's bedside, providing you with a sound education and encouraging sound practice skills.
Bradford District Care Trust was established in April 2002, bringing together health and social services to provide fully integrated Mental Health and Learning Disability services as one of the first NHS Care Trusts. It serves 555,000 people who live in an area of around 600 square miles.
The Care Trust provides health and social care for:
People with learning disabilities
Children and adolescents with mental health needs
Adults with mental health needs
Older people with mental health needs
The Trust employs 2,800 people, providing services across a wide range of community, residential and inpatient settings including working with service users and carers in their own homes.
You will have the opportunity to gain experience with health and social care professionals across a wide range of services. The Care Trust continually develops its services to meet the changing needs of the community, and needs nurses who can work in new and innovative ways in collaboration with other health and social care professionals.
Bradford Teaching Hospitals became a Teaching Hospital in 2003 and a Foundation Trust in 2004. The Trust is the main provider of hospital services to the people of Bradford and also provides specialist services for the wider population of Western West Yorkshire.
The Trust is one of the largest employers in the city of Bradford with 5,000 staff and is based at two hospitals in the city, Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke's Hospital.
The Trust offers inpatient, outpatient, day care and short-stay services in a variety of specialities and also community services in midwifery and children's services. It also offers outreach services in the community in collaboration with the Primary Care Trusts. The Trust has a new purpose built Accident and Emergency department, which is one of the busiest in the UK.
Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is at the forefront of nursing developments. You will have the opportunity to work within specialised units and wards and to gain knowledge and experience within an acute and non-acute setting.
In October 2006, the four Primary Care Trusts in the Bradford and Airedale areas merged to form Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust (tPCT). This trust serves people living in Bradford Metropolitan District Council and serves a population of 500,000 over a geographical area of 150 square miles.
The tPCT focuses on improving health and tackling inequality, developing primary and community health services and commissioning services to meet community needs in an area of the country which includes some of the most deprived and most affluent wards.
You will gain experience in GP surgeries, health centres, community hospitals and will undertake home visits to patients/clients. You can expect to be supported by district nurses, health visitors, practice nurses, school nurses and specialised nurses.
Our placement team ensures that you will cover the required number of placement hours for your training, across a broad range of different areas.
Wherever possible we take into account student¿s personal circumstances and individual wishes regarding particular placements, within the parameters of the requirements of the course, although this cannot always be guaranteed.
