Return to Practice for Health Care Professionals

Provisional Course Outline

This programme is planned over 12 weeks and incorporates 150 hours of theory and 150 hours in clinical practice. The first two weeks form an introductory block  taught in the School of Health Studies. Attendance is required Monday to Friday 9.30am - 3.30pm.

Over the remaining 10 weeks, students will undertake 150 hours of clinical practice with the support of a qualified mentor. The theoretical component of the course will continue with directed learning materials and attendance at group/individual tutorials.

Special Features

  • A 12 week programme (incorporating 150 hours of theory and 150 hours of clinical practice) for nurses and midwives whose registration with the NMC or other relevant professional body has lapsed
  • Learn about the changing contexts of healthcare, analyse and critically assess changes in clinical practice
  • Update skills and competencies to return to professional practice
  • Explore ethical and legal aspects in relation to healthcare provision
  • Learn more about essential clinical education, for example basic life support

Course Information

The Return to Practice programme will cover the following:

  • Study skills/numeracy
  • Changing contexts of health care
  • Perspectives on accountability
  • Ethical and leagl aspects in relation to health care provision
  • Essential clinical education, for example, basic life support
  • Clinical education including evidence based practice

The programme awards 30 credits at level 2 or 3. Returnees to midwifery must study at level 3. Nurses and other health care professionals can study at level 2 or 3 depending on qualifications and experience. This will be discussed with the course leader at interview.

Returnees to Midwifery need to notify the Local Supervising Midwifery Officer of their intention to undertake a return to practice course. For Yorkshire and the Humber the officer is:

Employability

The vast majority of students who successfully complete this course achieve their objective of returning to professional practice.


What are the entry requirements?

Students should already have:

  • A health professional qualification
  • Lapsed registration with the NMC (Nurses and Midwives)
  • Advice from the relevant professional body (professions other than nursing and midwifery)
  • Two satisfactory references, preferably from education and employment sources. References from friends and relatives are not appropriate.
  • Satisfactory occupational health clearance
  • CRB disclosure
  • Evidence of recent successful assessed study (within the last 5 years)
  • Awareness of changes in the NHS since last practiced

It is also strongly advised that applicants have experience of using information technology resources


How will I be assessed?

Students will need to complete the following assessed elements:

  • A case study relating to a specific area of care
  • A report reflecting on achievement of selected clinical competencies in practice
  • A numeracy test
  • Clinical practice (assessed as a pass or fail)

You must contact a Practice Placement Facilitator (PLF), before you complete the application form. The PLF will be able to support your placement requirements \and offer advice around your suitability for the course, although will not be assessing your academic suitability (this will be done by the course leader). The PLF must sign your application form to confirm they are willing to offer you a placement, as any forms received without acceptance of placement provision signatures will be returned to the applicant.
