Service User and Carer Involvement in the School of Health Studies

Service Users Group Photo with the Dean of School of Health Studies The School provides training and education for a wide variety of health and social care professionals at an undergraduate and postgraduate level.  In order for these programmes to be relevant they must reflect the important changes that are occurring in the provision of NHS and social care.

One of the key influences over the last few years has been the drive by the government, professional organisations and patient and carer groups to increase the involvement of people receiving health and social care services (and their carers) in planning what and how health and social care services should be delivered as well as being able to discuss openly with their care providers the best way of managing their illness or condition.

Consequently, it is vital that health and social care students develop the appropriate skills and knowledge during their training about how best to work in partnership with their future patients, client and carers. A really valuable way of doing this is to involve service users and carers in aspects of their training and education. We want to make sure that service users and carers' perspectives are firmly alongside the theoretical and practical components of the students' educational programmes.

Service users and carers current and past experience can be used to highlight and explain complex issues that arise in acute and long term conditions.  Service users descriptions of what it is like to manage their condition can provide students with a better understanding of the problems that they face and how health and social care workers can best help. Talking with carers and voluntary organisations facilitates the students understanding of the vital contribution made by families, friends, and community and support groups to the care of a service user.

The School is committed to developing a partnership with local service users and carers so that their experiences and expertise can be used to guide the development and delivery of our programmes.
