I visited a lot of Universities but I fell in love with Bradford straight away. I particularly love the method of learning at the University of Bradford as we rarely have lectures. Instead the Midwifery department favours hands on methods of teaching and learning.
After being made redundant from a 14 year long career in Banking, I had the opportunity to follow my heart and do something for me. My love of research, lifelong learning and interest in women's health naturally led to me Midwifery.
Everyone is really helpful at the University, they really do have your learning and best interests at heart. I have four children and the University tries, where ever possible, to offer family friendly hours during our University time. As a mature student returning to education after a big gap the Refreshers Event and New to Bradford Event were well worth it and helped me settle quickly back into University life.
For this course you need to have really good time management and be very committed to Midwifery. The course is very intense and you go out on placement within your first term. The University of Bradford tries, where ever possible, to place people in the hospital and local communities nearest to them, either Bradford Royal Infirmary or Airedale General Hospital. When on placement we are required to work shifts, including weekends and nights, meaning we have to be organised and again dedicated to our chosen career path. I enjoy the methods of teaching, such as workshops, debates and art and problem based learning. I enjoy the research and working as a group to solve our questions.
Bradford is an incredibly multi-cultural city with people from many diverse backgrounds and cultures. As a result your placements are really exciting and interesting and your experiences are broad and cross cultural, which puts you in a very good position for future employment as a Midwife.

Moving to the new building at the School of Health Studies has really added to my learning experience. We have got brand new equipment, so when we are in University we can update our skills and when we are out on placement and come back, we can show each other what we have learnt too. It is very, very helpful.
