Appointment of Examiners

Two Examiners are normally appointed for each candidate for a research degree, one of whom is an External Examiner and the other a member of the academic staff of the University who shall not normally be the candidate's Supervisor.

Supervisor(s) responsibilities

The Regulations for Research Degrees state that the appointment of Examiners must be proposed by the Supervisors and approved by the relevant Director of Postgraduate Research for the School.  In turn, the recommendation for the appointment of Examiners is approved by the Research Degrees Committee.

The completed Recommendation for Appointment of Examiners Form should be submitted to Research Degrees Committee (via the Hub-Student Administration and Support/Research team) for approval no later than two months prior to submission of the thesis.  Submitting an Appointment of Examiners Form (and any associated information - see below) after this time will inevitably lead to delays in sending a thesis out for examination.

The Recommendation for the Appointment of Examiners Form can be found online: http://www.brad.ac.uk/hub/ResearchStudents/Forms/

Supervisor(s) are required to inform the student of the proposed nominations for the appointment of Examiners in order that any difficulties which might arise in relation to the appointment of a particular individual can be identified and resolved at an early stage in the process.  The student has the right to veto any appointment of examiners.

Prior to submitting the completed Recommendation for Appointment of Examiners Form the Supervisor/s and/or Director of Postgraduate Research for the School should ensure all proposed examiners are willing to act in this capacity and the balance of the examining team (subject expertise and/or examining/supervisory experience) is fully considered.  This latter advice together with other key points for the appointment of examiners for research degrees is summarised in this pdf document: Keypoints for the appointment of Examiners

Please also note, where a proposed External Examiner has not acted at the University of Bradford before we also request a full academic CV be attached to the Appointment of Examiners Form (this should include a list of publications, together with research student supervisory and examining experience).  When the External Examiner has acted at the University of Bradford before, but not in the past 5 years, we also recommend a current CV be attached to the Appointment of Examiners Form.

Further information

The role and responsibilities of the Examiners are explained fully in Guidance for Internal and External Examiners for Research Degrees.  The formal requirements underpinning the appointment of Examiners are also set out in the Ordinances and Regulations for Research Degrees Sections.  The Guidance, Ordinances and Regulations are available online, please follow the Quick Link to the right of the page.
