Examiners for staff candidates
Members of academic staff who are candidates for a higher degree by research must have two External Examiners. In these circumstances there is no Internal Examiner but an Independent Chair known as a Link Person is normally appointed.
The Role of the Link Person
The Link Person is not an Examiner. Their role is to liaise with the External Examiners and the candidate in co-ordinating arrangements for the Viva. In particular, they should ascertain whether the student wishes the Supervisor(s) to be present at the Viva and then inform the Supervisor(s) whether or not they should attend. The Link Person should chair the Viva and ensure it is conducted according to University Regulations, and where appropriate liaise with the External Examiners, candidate and Supervisor(s) after the Viva.
Research Assistants
Research Assistants are classified as members of academic-related rather than academic staff and, as such, the normal arrangements for the appointment of examiners apply (that is appointment of an External and an Internal Examiner).
More detailed information may be found in the Guidance for Internal and External Examiners of Candidates for Research Degrees.
